Never had any problems with any of my old cobra RDs The last one I had a few years back even gave me advanced warning of approaching emergency vehicles which the way they run their sirens these days that would come in handy.
I dont so much believe in them anymore since I kinda stand out as it is. My new frame of mind is its hard to get a ticket if your not doing anything to get pulled over for.

I have the Escourt Passport 8500 x50 with the blue Leds.

This has saved my butt a few good times. I usually get tipped off good 1-2 miles before i stumble across a cop.

the bad part is most of them tell you that the cop is there and they can already see you, or people think that you can be doing 120 and then get back down to the 55 mph speed limit in time before the cop sees you

I forgot all about these things, I need to get myself one. Possibly could've saved myself a ticket from going 85 in a 50 on the highway :swear:

Ehhh i got one from my friend for free after he totalled his 300zx. Said it cost him bout $30, and it has saved me many times. I havent really needed it to show me a cop thats 3 miles down the road, but it does catch them from a pretty far distance. Only bad part is that it catches walmart sensors on the doors. But, cant complain when its free.

A lot of police departments are going to 800 series radios now, and to get one of those you are probably forking out over a grand. Scanners are getting out dated. The only good use a scanner would have around my area is for the sheriff's dept, and since most of their cars don't have radars (they rarely write tickets) it would be worthless to me. As far as radar detectors...save the money and make friends with cops so when you do get a ticket you have someone to call to get you out of it.
*Edit* One last thing, most detectors don't pick up until you get fairly close to the cops, and if you can see them, they can see you....by then its too late :(

mostly only major cities, and you can get a digital trunking scanner for only $150 at radio shack to pick up the 800 mhz range, i just think its fun to hear shit like car wrecks or a dog at large, then drive by and check them out,

Im not in a big city, and they still are on 800. Not to mention they all talk in number codes. I know a few of them, but not a lot. The sheriff office here are the ones left out. They are still on the old scanners (but are converting over to 800), and the only code they use is 10-4. I did not know about the digital trunking scanner though.

The radar dectors aren't as great as they are cracked up to be because most if not all cops will just click on the radar as soon as they see you passing everyone else at a high rate of speed. By the time you see the cop and your radar dector goes off to aleart you to them being there. Your busted, cuz by the time you tap your breaks to slow down the cop has reg. your speed and to top it off if your in a state that they are elegal in. Not only will you get a speeding ticket but your 200-300 radar dector will be conficated and you will be fined once again for using elegal equipment.
You best bet is to go with the flow of traphic. Possibly get a hand held cb. Despite what most people say about truckers they will aleart anyone in radio range to where the cop is sitting.
What good will a radar dector do you if your driving at night when no one else is around and the cop is sitting in the weeds and clocks you after you have already passed him or her and just does an instant on?
The same companys that make the radars make the radar dectors.

is most states the police have to have some sort of lights on to clock you, by the same token, they can sit there and not be taking radar and when they see that your speeding, click on thier headlights a zap you

I found this review on the top 5 radar detectors
1) Beltronics Pro RX65 Radar Detector (http://erclk.about.com/?zi=19/Vbx)
Many critiques agree that Bell is one of the best detectors available. It features a new "POP Alert" detection that is super fast in alerting you to the latest Ka speed measurement devices The Threat Display T is a sophisticated means of tracking multiple radar signals and their relative signal strength. False alarms are virtually gone with the new AutoScanT mode that offers four select functions.
2) Beltronics Vector 995 Multi-Band Radar Detector (http://erclk.about.com/?zi=19/Vby)
This is a five-star device offering super fast detection and signal processing which is important against laser and instant-on radar. The exclusive Shadow Technology T keeps you invisible to the radar detectors detector (VG2). The Voice Alerts can be heard in noisy environments allowing you too keep your eyes on the road. It also offers DSP (Digital Signal Processing) to help minimize false alarms.
3) Beltronics BEL Express Cordless 946 Cordless Radar Detector (http://erclk.about.com/?zi=19/Vbz)
The cordless feature is great, especially if you own more then one vehicle or motorcycle. The BEL 946 offers strong protection from X, K, and Ka bands of police radar. It comes with the VG-2 Guard which shuts the unit down when it detects a VG-2 unit (radar detector detector). Some reviews mention its sensitivity in construction areas but with the VGA mode it should not present much of a problem.
4) Passport 8500 X50 (http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/XJ&sdn=couponing&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.escortradar.com%2Fx50.htm)
The Passport 8500 X50 is equipped with the "V-Tuned" radar receiver which provided on all police radar including the POP mode, X-Band and offers a 50% improvement off the K and Ka bands then the other Passport 8500 series. Because of the Digital Signal Processing, false alarms are minimal. "...the top of the pyramid for overall radar and LIDAR detection." - Motor Trend 2004 Detector Test.
5) Cobra XRS9700 Radar Detector Portable Radar Detectors Y (http://erclk.about.com/?zi=19/Vc0)
This is Cobra's newest detector comes equipped with many features including its exclusive 11-Band (TM) technology and the SmartMute (TM) that offers 3 levels of false signal controls, which reduces if not totally eliminates false alerts. It also offers protection from both VG-2 and Spectre (detectors that detect detectors), although some say Spectre will still detect this unit. Cordless units are always a plus, allowing you to use it with ease, in other cars or trucks.
I would still go with the valentine one though.
