Hi, i have a 1997 Ford F-150 2WD Supercab V6 pickup. It has around 120K miles on it and is running pretty good. Our mechanic says that a tuneup would cost around 300$, and i was wondering if any of you knew what parts to replace and how hard it is to do it if i wanted to replace them myself and save some $$$. Sometimes when the truck starts after sitting for a long time it almost dies but then the RPM's go back up after gassing it a bit, dunno if a tuneup would help this too? I know that for a tune up they change the plug wires, we change the plugs ourselves, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Stay with the OEM spark plugs or Autolites.Motorcraft spark plugs are Autolites with the Motorcraft name on them.Stay away from cheap plug wires from AutoZone and Advanced.Cheap plug wires are not the way to go,you will replace them a number of times.Change the fuel filter also and yes it is a part of a tune up.I believe it takes the special tool to get the lines off the fuel filter.

Thanks, i think im going to go to advance auto and see if i need a special tool for the fuel filter, they have OEM parts in stock so it might be easier.
Im not sure which plug wires to get:

or

Also, does anyone know any ways to get better mileage and a bit more power from the truck thats not expensive? i was thinking air intake but not sure how the pricing goes. Also sometimes when im driving, and accelerating harder than usual the RPM goes up to 3 or 4 before it shifts (usually around 2nd or 3rd gear) does anyone what could be causing this?

the rough start could be the EGR valve stuck open should not mess with gas mileage.you also need to change air filter with tune up which will mess with gas mileage.and cat converters could be getting a little cloged which affects the back pressure and cause tranny to shift a little later
