UPDATE: ok i found the magic switch.. jumpered the little plug and turned the key on... tada! the engine light flashes and I got my code!!! apparently my EGR is messed up... i remember seeing someone posting something about taking it apart and cleaning it and it being good for a year or so more... so my next project is just that... I checked and a new EGR is like $120 or so... OEM only :(

are any of you shocked at the check engine lights?? lol...

I have a 1994 tracker with the engine light on for about 8 months now... I have the book for the truck that says "hand held computers will not work on anything under 95". You have to jumper the plug near the battery to get the computer to flash the check engine light in a certain sequence... just like all the old vehicles used to do before the smart computers came out...

I have jumpered the plug and can not get the engine light to flash any sequence .. I have had the truck in atleast 4 shops that can not figure it out either...

I've gone as far as unplugging all the sensors and resetting the computer(taking leads off battery for over an hour) and plugging them back in one at a time to see if I can find a bad sensor.

The book I have doesnt say anything about a magic reset switch, but im going to check behind my speakers like the other posts here have stated.

Any ideas while im checking into the magic switch?

UPDATE: ok.. it was the EGR.. i cleaned it out (like someone posted here) and the light went off!!! it stayed off for 2 weeks and came back on saying the same exact thing.... I took it off again and it is as clean as when I did it the first time... but now the hose connecting it (vacuum) has apparently gotten real hot and expanded and got sticky(heat does wonderful things to rubber hoses eh)... I will have to replace the hose with a tuffer hose I guess.. but why would that cause the computer to say its gone again? losing vacuum maybe?

On my 95 it's a slide switch. It is there, just kinda hidden. Mounted on a little bracket if I remember right.

when my 92 turned 240,000 the check engine light came on. I found the switch and turned it off. Is the check engine unit still functioning.

thats the old silly timer that says time to change the oxygen sensor. It is time based or some such rot.
modern cars actually test the OXY while driving.
just reset this silly device. and forget it.
but do pay attention to Check Engine lights that are real.
It will send out the morse code for what is wrong.
a very crude feature, to be sure.
the Shop manual has the codes.
