67' Chevelle

I have come across a 67 chevelle, body is in fair condition(minor hail damage, surface rust no rot), It would be a great car for me to start out with, The only problem is that the car comes with a 283 V8, I was wondering how hard and expensive it would be to get a bigger motor for the car, preferably something that came as an option for the 67 line. and what were the options for 67?

Well I would say get a 350 get used to that then stroke it to a 383 unless you just get a 383 right off the bat.Im not sure what came with the 67's off the line though.

283's are not bad at all. IMO if the 283 is a good runner, keep it and worry more about fixing the rest of the car.

This way you can drive and enjoy the car, without breaking the bank getting a bigger engine.

what were the engine options straight from the factory for a 67'?

In 1967 a 396 making about 325 HP, it was reduced by 10 HP due to the GM corporate policy regarding one-BHP per ten-pounds of curb weight,eventually the 375 HP option was taken out of the line.(I googled it)

we'll I've haven't been able to look at the car, but he says its original, is it possible he just doesnt know what he is talking about and that it is a 396? i'm lining up a time to see the car so ill read up about where to look on the engine block to figure out what it is. anyone know where the numbers should be stamped?

The numbers in wich you seek are in front of head #2 (passenger side) on the deck surface of the block, and behind the drivers side head along the casting between the head and the transmission. The number in front should be little and stamped into the block and should be 8 digits and should contain both numbers and letters, such as *T1027CLJ*. The number in back should be raised from the block, and they are about as big as a thumb nail, and is usually 7 letters like *3970010*.

283= one bad to the bone engine. You can spin those things up to more RPM's than you can the bigger CID small blocks. They take the abuse of high RPM's way better than 350's and 400's. If you put a big fat cam, and a tunnel ram and a couple AFB's on top of it, those little things can straight up scream. Great rev characteristics. With the right set of heads on it, those things are sick.

In the 67 you could get an inline 6 (I don't remember the cube's), a 283 (great engine), a 327 (sweet small block), and the SS had the 396.

There were 325, 350, 360 and 375 HP versions of 396 in '67. The 375 was the nasty one, and the 350 was the "good" streeter. The 360 is pretty rare, and kind of a"white elephant"... A small block in that car is great for driving, and a modest level of performance. The 383 or 400 WOULD provide more power, making it closer to the SS.

Current collector value of '67 Chevelle or Malibu makes them VERY desirable. If you can get it for a good price, you can't lose!
