Breaking in transmission

I'm starting to break in the new transmission, I only filled it with 4 quarts of dexIII/mercon ATF. At first when I ran through the gears, it made a sucking noise like it was dry, then after a few minutes EACH GEAR vibrated slightly but did not kick in, especially reverse which usually does. What could be the problem?

Okay new problem, the gearbox isn't working. No matter what I shift to.

did you put a new filter in the tranny you got in there now? make shure you have the TV cables adjusted right befor you go driving it,other wise you will fry the tranny.

Yes there's a new filter, I just did that today. Also, I connected the TV cable the way I took it apart, how do I adjust it?

do you have a hanes manual? or a repair manual? it will tell you in there, i am not shure on how you adjust it.

TV adjustment (normally) is done by pushing the detent lock in and sliding the adjustment tab all the way in (back). Release the detent lock and manually open the throttle slowly and evenly to WOT. The tab will pull out and settle in where it should based on cable condition.
Now, in reality, unless it's a brand new cable assembly, that's not going to be the case, you'll need to adjust accordingly. Do the above and see how it shifts. If it's soft, manually push the detent back 1 notch and test drive again. If still soft continue 1 notch at a time ONLY.
The same applies to if it were shifting hard, just bring the detent out 1 notch at a time until it's accepatable.
However, I think fluid is the issue here. The torque converter alone eats quite a few guarts. And even if it was full (T/C) 4 quarts omly in the trans seems a litttle light, isn't it more like 6 or 7? Don't remember off the top of my head.

4 qts of fluid isn't going to be enough, especially if the trans and torque converter were both empty. A 700R4 holds a total of 10 qts of fluid.

That's what I was thinking, about 4 in T/C and 6 1/2 ish down the tube.

You need to fill it up with fluid before you burn it up. :grinyes:
If you have not already burnt up clutches.

Put more fluid in.. The pump will fill up the converter.

Add about 5 more qts in dipstick tube and start checking the dip stick.
The TC wiil take care of itself.
If the transmission was dry they take 10-11-12 qts.

thanks, hopefully I didn't burn anything while testing it. Stupid Haynes manual says 4.7 quarts

I'd stay away from running it thru the gears until it has around 7 to 8 qts. in it. Hey, at least you don't have a C6 or E4OD, they take about 13qts..

Forget an automatic C6, I hate automatics. I need a clutch and a shift knob on my best cars. I heard the 700R4 was strong though.
what would happen if I overfilled it? what would the tranny do?

Alright I doubt this will happen to ANYONE reading this thread but, I just added 5 quarts of ATF to the dipstick filler tube, and I adjusted the TV cable, and my reverse works. So I took it for a test drive and guess how it performs?
the same as the shitcanned tranny, WTF am I supposed to do about that? Am I doing something wrong here or did the junkyard give me a bad tranny?

The C6 and 700 can be great transmissions, but in stock form they won't take a whole helluva lot of abuse. Overfilling is bad, as it causes the trans fluid to aeriate and cause cavitation(air bubbles). If your unsure, start the vehicle add a half quart at a time(while it's running), then let it drain down and check it. When it's at the bottom of the crosshatch, it only takes a half quart to top it off. Drive it a day and check it again, cause it'll probably need topped off again.
I'm not found of slushboxes either, but as I get older I'd rather not deal with a clutch...

I take it out on a residential road and can't get the speedo past 30, plus the tranny sounds like it did before. The difference here is that it's already that bad with the acceleration while the old tranny was happening as the car drove around.

Have you checked the fluid level with the dip stick engine running hot.
If proper fluid level and TV cable adjusted good is about all you can do for it.

Anyway, how does a valve body/automatic tranny break? I never understood how that happens or what happened to mine.

Big foot ,old age, improper service, improper adjustment. running out of fluid.
Many ways you can break them or wipe them out.
Even improper installation. Like not putting enought fluid in them flushing rad cooler line and improper adjustments.

And that's why I hate A/Ts. They're more complex than they need to be in my opinion.

if you know how a lathe works thats how a CVT works (one type)
just a belt on two pulleys that can change sizes, as one side gets bigger/other gets smaller, that changes the gear ratio-> causes no shifting

I gotta have a shifter, OHH I saw that on the new nissan commercials. The guy is driving and the girl is doing her makeup, but there's no sudden movements or shift noises, so the guy starts making the shifting noises. Funny but asshatish, if he has a tranny that doesn't shift, why is he making the noises??

If you watch close, she's waiting for a shift before she starts putting on her makeup, so as to not smear it everywhere. Ya'll must've never been married!
