1.MY 95 jetta (manual tran.) sputters when it idles and when you I try to accelerate it acts like it isn't getting any fuel for a while and then it gets it..
and then it will back fire in the muffler and the intake..
2. Also when it is in idle the check engine light will come on and then when the engine gets to full rev. it has horse power it goes away... then after the rpm's coome down it starts all over .. IT WILL IDLE.
Thanks,
D

Go to autozone or just about any autoparts place and have them read the engine codes that caused the check engine light. There are loads of possiblities:
Dirty mass airflow sensor, bad O2 sensor, dirty air filter, dirty fuel injectors, failing fuel pump (not so likely). Have your fuel pressure checked if they will do it for you. I'm betting on the air filter.

To me it sounds like you need to clean your MAF sensor thoroughly. Denaturated alcohol (you can get it at any hardware store, Home Depot, Lowe's etc.), carb cleaner, or CRC cleaner will do the job. I had the same problem weeks ago, and after the cleaning, my Jetta 95 GLS runs much smoother and stronger. Make sure you don't poke or mess too much with the wires. Good luck!!
