MAF sensor replacement.

I just replaced my MAF sensor but the car now runs worse than it did before. I reset the code (P102) with my scan tool but it came back after 15 minutes. Do I need to reset the computer?

What year model GP to include engine size. Did you replace it with a new GM or some aftermarket brand?

How does the car run with the MAF sensor disconnected?

The car is a 2000 GT with a 3.8 engine.
The sensor was an aftermarket. (Standard Products or something).
I have not tried to unplug the sensor yet. Is there a way to reset the system somehow? (Disconnect the battery?)

You can try disconnecting the battery negative cable for either a short period of time or long (overnight). It really doesn't reset the PCM but may help. If the MAF circuit was working correctly the P0102 DTC error shoud clear on its own after a few drive cycles. Was that MAF replacement new or a remanufactured? In my experiences a P0102 error code was always a bad MAF sensor or wiring from it to the PCM module.

I unplugged the MAF sensor and it worked fine. Reset the PCM using your recommendation posted here.

Plugged the MAF back in and it still chugs under hard acceleration. I'm guessing it to be a bad MAF sensor.

Good. Glad you found it. That is the field expedient method. It is common to go through more than one MAF sensor especially when they are aftermarket and/or remanufactured. Not sure about the Standard but Niehoff and A1-Cardone for sure. Your current MAF sensor is not generating the proper frequency to the PCM so you'll get a P0102 DTC error code.

BTW - You can run a short period of time with the MAF disconnected. The idle with be a little erratic until the engine warms up. Very slight fuel economy loss is possible.

Replaced it with an AC-Delco sensor and all is well. Lesson learned.
