I have an 89 Cavalier z24 2.8L.........Lately it has been running really rough and the exhause smells very gassy... So i checked to see if all cylinders were getting spark.. One or two of them would get spark only half of the time.. This leads me to belive that i have a bad coil pack.. Does anyone know how i can tell if I have a bad coil pack and not a bad module..... ????? i would really appreciate it!??

test for coil pack

Detach the primary wiring connectors and secondary coil wire from the ignition coil.
Using an ohmmeter on the high scale, connect one lead to a grounding screw and the second lead to one of the primary coil terminals.
The reading should be infinite. If not, replace the ignition coil.
Using the low scale, place the ohmmeter leads on both the primary coil terminals.
The reading should be very low or zero. If not, replace the ignition coil.

Fig. 1: Connect the ohmmeter as shown to test the ignition coil

Using the high scale, place one ohmmeter lead on the high tension output terminal and the other lead on a primary coil terminal.
The reading should NOT be infinite. If it is, replace the ignition coil.
