First LOUD hum then rotating clank '96

I checked this site out last week looking for a possible explanation for the loud hum that I was experiencing between 1500 and 2000 RPMs. I'm not an experienced mechanic myself, so I was unable to know what to look for when looking under the hood and/or under the actual engine. I thought it might be something to do with the muffler/exhaust, so I looked at it an found a large enough hole to give me reason to think that could be the cause of the noise. Now though, this morning as I was driving into work, I pushed the clutch in to down-shift and heard this loud rotating CLANKing noise that slowed with the speed of the vehicle and any excelleration of the engine ahd no effect on the clank clank clank noise that continued after changing into both lower and higher gears. I immediately turned the car around and drove to the nearest garage I knew of.
Now, not knowing/having a good idea as to what the problems might be, I fear I might be in a very vulnerable position.
Can anyone offer me possible sources to the 2 distinct problems and perhaps a bit of advice on dealing with this garage that is new to me as I am relatively new to the area?
Thank you in advance for your time and energy!
Daniel

Since the clanking did not increase in frequency with engine speed ... we may assume its not engine.
Did it not change with the different gears? If not, we might guess that it is not tranmission ... but that's a guess.
That leaves brakes, wheels, driveshafts, and the clutch as being high on the list of possible items.
The "Hum", I've got no guess for.

I would suspect clutch related since it happened when you pushed it in...
The hum is hard to say... would have to hear it. You can not tell from what area it is coming? A hole in the muffler... very possible source. You can try patching it, but that rarely lasts for long.
Sounds like two seperate problems. Again, would have to hear the hum to say so for sure. Maybe when parked you can have someone rev it up while you move around the vehicle to pinpoint it?
