Private schools

So, that resurrected thread got me wondering how many people here actually go to private schools, or have gone to.

I did, Grenville Christian College. It's a boarding school with crappy food, awsome education, and sort of ok dorm life. I enjoyed my 4 ears there, I made some good friends, had some good times, and got a much better education than i could have had at any public school i've seen.

Also, is there a drug "problem" at your schools. I've heard that alot of private schools have big drug problems. Mine wasn't that bad. basicly everyone in grade 11 and 12 smoked weed and many of the grade 10's and 9's did. A few people did it at school but were smart enough not to get caught. A friend of mine smoked up at least twice a day at school, which might not seem like alot to some people but my school is fairly busy so it's hard to find the time. We once hotboxed a girls bathroom on the last night at school, we didn't get caught because we weren't stupid, only stupid people get caught.

My school only had 250-300 people from kindergarden (4 or 5 year olds) to grade 12. so we had small classes. my graduating class was the biggest class in the school, we were ~35 people.

I went to the in-between, a Diocese owned school.

Didn't really have a drug problem there, but the education was definitely awesome.

I won't tell you what we used to say about the Dio girls.

Don't worry, I found out after the operation...

:uhoh:

Errr, yeah, I think even the Dio girls knows what is said about them, I'm pretty sure they term it "feedback"

Always gone to public, co-ed schools.

Good size drug problem at my last high school.

Not so much at the one I went to in SA though (although I was only 8th grade so I didn't know shit)

Went to catholic school 3rd-8th grade.
There were 6 people in my 8th grade class.
We didn't know what drugs were.

High school was a culture shock what I gained in pure education benefits from the private school was probably more than negated by the sociological problems.

I went to the same public school system from Kindergarten to HS Graduation. We had a decent-sized drug problem. In grades 9-12 there were about 1000 people, to give an idea about how big the school was. The administration wouldn't admit to having a drug problem, but we did have a drug-sniffing dog in the school on a routine basis. Most of it was weed, but not too many people brought it with them. It was a rich community, so there were some higher-end drugs, but alcohol was a bigger problem, IIRC.

I went to public schools, but after all the issues I had there my parents sent my brother to Marmion Academy, which is a very very good private school and also Military based.

I must say, the military based schools seem to be the best. you usually get a good education, you don't have all of the social problems that you ahve at most of the private schools i've seen, it keeps the kids fit, and it keeps them disciplined. that's the biggest problem with my old school, some people would get away with murder where others would get screwed for everything. also, if you had a bit of common sense, you could get around the rules pretty easily. i mean, we're supposed to sign out before going off campus. i did it maybe 5 times the entire year, and went out almost once a week. it was stuff like that that you should get caught for but didn't/

Drug problems are common. I just graduated from a school of 2500 and we had a huge drug problem there. I'd say 65% (if not more) of the school did drugs, had drugs on campus, or even used them on campus.

Went to Catholic school kindergarten to 4rth then public school when the Catholic school went under.

Education comparison was hard to say I think it was worse in the catholic school as far as the level of education I got, nuns taught everything, I always got B's and C's in catholic school but did much better in public after I caught up. Seemed to me catholic school had old out of date books/information compared to public but I started in 5th grade and things obviously got more complicated from the lower grades to the higher ones.

Ditto on the culture shock on entering public school 'welcome to the jungle' seems appropriate after I discovered music, drugs, sex etc. :)

As far as community college vs 'regular' colleges I had the unfortunate experience of going to two community colleges for a semester, long story, and both were significantly worse in comparison to my regular college. The classes/material in those community colleges covered about half of what a course in my regular college would have covered in the same time.

I currently go to a private/catholic school. Marion Catholic. (smallest High School in Ohio) It has about 90 kids in grades 9-12.

I remember when we moved to NZ my mom was adamant I was going to go to a Christian/Catholic boys school.

Told her I'd rather not go to school then, co-ed for lyfe.

Got here and it turned out to be too expensive anyway haHAH!

Definatley a shock coming here though. At my school in SA there was a definate hierarchy of respect, you respect the levels above you, the prefects and the teachers.

At my school here there were no prefects and no respect whatsoever. Back home you'd get in deep trouble if you swore around a teacher. Here the kids were swearing at the teachers and only told to leave the room.

I went to public schools my whole life. I knew a few kids who would smoke weed and drink alcohol in middle school (6th-8th) and high school was considerebly "worse". Lots of weed and alcohol, coke started getting bigger, even saw some crack being dealt and knew of a few guys who used heroin regularly. About every week a fight would break out in school and every month or so we'd have the dogs walk through the building. Chicago public schooling rocks.

I went to private school. Catholic girls do it the best!

I went to public school up until my freshman year in high school. It was a drastic change, and I'm glad I made the decision. A better education in my opinion. No violence or stuff like that.

I agree that you get a better education at smaller/private schools, but you have to pay for it.

Never really went to private or catholic schools. Fairly decent drug problem, and education sucked.

I found the biggest problem with living at school though was the girls. not only did we have a small selection of them, we lived with them (in different dorms though) so you saw them at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. it's hard to get a girlfriend when you live with them. it's also not as good of an idea because you live with them so you can't exactly ignore them if you have a bad breakup. my roommate had a bad breakup with a friend of mine. it was so awkward because she was telling me stuff about him, he was telling me stuff about her. it was horrible to be in the middle of it but i couldn't get away from it because I lived with them lol.

Same thing here. Geesh I gave up with two of my friends and left them to bitch about eachother with eachother.

I went to one of the better public school systems in the country. However, the upper administration liked to run the school like a prision, and rich kids with money were the ones with the drugs and got into trouble. The education was good, but for the most part my schoolmates were filled with apathy with all the reflection and other bullshit.

I had a few great teachers this year, one in particular that inspired my major. However, my math teacher sucked and the school was too much of a collective pussy to fire him dispite hundreds of complaints from students and parents alike.

Public schools my whole life. Most of my friends in middle school drank and smoked weed. I knew some kids from catholic schools, and from what I've heard they are consistently worse on every level than public schools. Only from what I've heard though.

My high school in California was pretty good. My sophomore chemistry class was teaching us some insane hardcore chemical equations. Then I moved to Maui...

Let me tell you something. If I have kids, I'm not letting them get their education on Maui. I swear to God I knew more about chemistry than my Maui chemistry teacher. When I moved to Maui in the middle of sophomore year it was like going from 10th grade to 7th grade. All I did to pass my classes was all my make-up assignments at the end of each quarter. Other than that I never did homework. My GPA dropped right along with the challenge.

In canada i found that the catholic schools are consistantly better than public schools (both are publicly owned and you don't pay extra for one or the other) because it seems that they have more money than public schools or are run better because they have much better schools and much better facilities. The teaching is the same but everything else in catholic schools seems to be better.

I went to public school all the way through High School and currently go to a Private University (Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois). I can't really complain about my university. I'm getting a good education in an environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle. A lot of kids come in thinking that they can just do everything that you could at any normal uni and when they find out (even though it was spelled out in the admissions packet they filled out) they get pissed and say "this place sucks because I can't get trashed every night!"

All in all I enjoy it:smile:. Going into my Junior year and have already had greater opportunities than I would have had if I had gone to a state school.

i went to a public school all my life. also, our private schools were usually catholic or jewish schools. i'm sure there was a drug "problem" there, but not nearly as close as our public schools; I believe at one point our high school was responsible for the most in-school ecstacy deals in the suburban tri-state area. i think it was Time or some other magazine... too long ago to remember, so i guess you'll just have to take my word for it.
