saftey feature for reverse

hello, i have a 2001 cavalier Z24. its a great car and i love it. the only thing is i had to buy a new shifter knob because it got loose and kept coming off. these cars have the built in saftey feature which is a plastic housing that you lift up to be able to shift into reverse. i had to cut off the top bit of that housing because the housing actually fits up into the knob when you lift it up and this new knob i have has a taper on it so it wont allow that. i managed to get it working but what i really want to know is if there is a way to disable this feature. just have it like any other manual transmission. i dont need a saftey feature because i know i wont accidently put it in reverse lol. if anyone knows how that would be great. thank you for your time.

the saftey feature is a little piece of plastic...just cut it right off the shift shaft. all it is is a little piece of plastic that stops it from going into reverse, and its not hard 2 get off...
