Daughters car has a trans problem, not shifting. Do the sealed units have screans or modulator values? Do not want to pay for rebulit or new trans if service and clean up will fix problem. Bought car used has 100500 miles.

Sounds like it could be low on trany fluid, though thiers no dip stick to check. Really bad idea if you ask me.
Thiers a place to fill the fluid under the air intake by the TB, right on top of the trans, thiers a RED cap.
Unscrew it and try adding some trans fluid Dexron 3 , I'd add half a quart or so and see if that helps. If it hasnt already been done. But if the trans pan("L" shaped) is all wet with trany fluid then it could be more than 1 quart low, it should be checked.
To check the fluid level you'll need a lift, usually if you take it to a Quick Lube place they'll check it for free(I suppose some dealers might also just to sell some Dexron III ) ,
thiers a drain plug on the trans housing, if it runs out with the car level then its full, if none runs out with car level then its probly low.
GM does recomend that the fluid and filter should be changed every 50k miles( its all in the manual that came in the glove box, that is if it came with one).
Not bad to change if you can get it up on jack-stands, though very messy and dealing with disposal of used fluid.
As far as "screans or modulator values" yes thiers tons of parts in these 4t40(the grand am trans), and a couple hand fulls of electronic parts. Not to mention not easy getting it out :grinno:
hope that helps

We had the fluid ck'd & mechanic said it was full. When he tried to put some in it ran out. I sure hope it not the computer. We have a lot of sensors out,ABS, Track off & both service engine lights are on. Maybe I'll find a good mechanic that knows how to read the DYNO machine.
Thanks for the suggestions I don't know what else to do. Guess I'll spend money HA!HA!

any decently good shop should hav a trans code scanner.
Thats about the only way to find out,
when your having trouble with these new transmissions.

New Mechanic New Dyno machine NOT TRANSMISSION. He sent me to another guy. $116.00 later sensors are fixed but still not shifting his machine says it is the catailc converter there is another $100.00. Maybe this will fix the problem.
