Read your owners manual real close. My 96 owners manual says put the t-case in "N" but the transmission goes in gear.
The reason for leaving an automatic in "D" while flat towing is because the transmission will not lubricate itself while towing so you put it in "D" to keep its internals from spinning with no lubrication. Even with the t-case in "N", I guess some motion is transmitted through it to the transmission. Im not sure of the reason for leaving a manual in gear.

It had a snowplow attachment on the front this is going to be modifitied or partly removed and tow bar installed by hitch company so lit can be towed by motorhome.

Usually I do not like th argue with owners manuals, but I would leave both the case and the 5 spd trans in neutral. I do not have 100% faith that the case will stay in neutral. My case has on occasion had the shift lever sink a bit and start to grind the 4-high gear.
Leaving the trans in neutral may just save some damage on the case.
