97 cavalier fuel problems

One hot day running the A/C on high, my 1997 Cavalier just stopped.
I was very low on fuel so I probably ran out of gas, but it could another problem. I walked to get gas and put in 1 gallon, then 2, then 3. The car would not start. I ran the battery down and carried it home to recharge.

Later, I checked the fuses, relays, spark, theft system and banged on the tank a few times and cleaned out the fuel filter. I really can't hear the fuel pump engaging when I turn on the key, but I don't hear so well. The only thing I hear is the EGR click.

Sometimes it seems like it almost starts the first time but after I press the gas it seems like it floods, but I'm not positive.

I can't afford $750 to replace the fuel pump at a dealer let alone $200 to tow and diagnose. So, I ordered a $50 fuel pump repair kit on Ebay.

Does any one have any experience replacing a fuel pump on a cavalier or any suggestions would be appreciated?

its not really hard to do but it requires you dropping your fuel tank. next thing is when you turn your motor over dont press the gas, you are fuel injected there is no need to try and pump the gas for all it will do is flood you out...if your runing bush plugs you will want to replace them for once they get soaked they arent worth crap.

Thanks for your reply. The car runs for a few seconds when I put a little gas in the carbertor so the plugs should be ok. I don't see how it could get flooded if the fuel pump is bad. So either the problem is something else or I'm wrong in thinking it is flooding. Could it be a plugged PVC valve or the pump regultor?
