Oil weights

This is the first time I have to put oil into the Passport (just bought used) Its a 96, 4wd, 3.2L manual approx 120,000mls.........................
The guy I bought it from said he used fully synthetic oil. I plan on looking for that-
What about the weights though?
Im in Jersey, fairly hot weather as of late, but I will be traveling cross country in Sept. Is there anything specific I should be looking for now/then during the trip to use as a specific?

In my opinion, as I also use full-synthetic only, is to use 0W-40 Mobil 1 brand all year long, in all weather.

I'm from Manhattan, moved to Chicago about 7 years ago, and now I'm in Hawaii.

0W-40 Mobil 1 from Autozone or wherever else you can get it, all year long.

A close second place would be Mobil 1 5W-30 Truck & SuV formula, available very cheaply from Wal-Mart in 5-quart jugs.

I've found mobil to be a noisy oil for my 95.5. I'd go with virtually any other brand.

I personally found that my rodeo likes fresh oil every 3000 miles. With such a short interval, full synthetic is overkill. So, I use a high quality conventional oil like chevron, havoline, valvoline or pennzoil. So far 10w30 has been the optimal weight for protection and quietness. Make sure you use a decent filter like purolator, napa (wix) etc.

Fact of the matter, the guy who had it before me suggested full synthetic and noted every 3000, so I made the choice not to make any changes. The truck has and still runs beautifully. I just wasnt sure about the weight.

I went with the full synthetic Mobil 5W-30. Since I dont know what exactly was in there before, in trying this I havent found anything to dislike. I ran about 50miles on it already.
When the next complete change is due, I plan on throwing in a new filter.

I'd personally use a 10w-30 in summer and 5w-30 in winter, IF your winter temps dip below 30F consistently in winter. Otherwise stick to 10w-30, doesn't shear off as badly.

Another good oil is Rotella synthetic 5w-40, you can use this year round, down to -40F.

Whether you choose regular or synthetic is your choice, but I will say these engines DO like clean oil very frequently and even with synthetic I wouldn't go more then 4k miles - just my opinion of course, as these lifters will get clogged easily and make lots of noise.

These Isuzu engines are picky about the oil filters, and they will tick loudly if you put one on they don't like, i.e. Fram is the worst offender.

My truck used to tick on any filter but the OEM Isuzu filter, oil didn't appear to matter too much (used 10w-30 Havoline for the 1st 150k miles). For some odd reason, over the course of 9yrs in ownership, I had never thought to try a Napa Gold before - I'm on my 2nd one now and I love it.

This summer I ran 1.5qts 5w-20 with about 4.5 qts 15w-40 Motorcraft mixture and a Napa Gold (1334) filter, truck ran beautifully.

I'm not fond of consistently changing oil types, but the truck was over the 4k and I wanted the oil OUT - this round has 10w-30 Maxlife HM with Napa filter, I'll run this through half of winter as our "winter" doesn't really show till February.

I used to use Syn.0W40 but moved to Syn.10W30 due to fuel economy.
Basically synthetic blurred the oil's initial grade.

Do an experiment, place samples of
(0W30, 0W40, 5W30, 10W30 Synthetic oil)
and (5W30, 10W30 Conventional oil) inside the freezer.
Check the samples the next day.

I'm using Amsoil series 2000 0w30 and Amsoil filters. Changed at 1yr/25K mile intervals.

i give up, what happens to the samples? are they all comparable to each other?

I've used 10w-30 for my 96 and it has run great. I recently moved to Iowa from Texas so Ramblin Fever's advice to "5w-30" in the winter is good advice.

Now I've noticed many brands on here. I wanted to know if there was a big difference between high mileage to regular oil. I've use 75K high mileage Penzoil on my 126K Isuzu Rodeo 96. It's about 3 dollars more for a 5 quart jug than regular oil. Now I also heard someone using havoline for their car, which is cheap oil compared to the others. Does it matter what brand of oil you use? At walmart there is some generic stuff that is cheap, and then there's like I think Texaco Oil or havoline oil that is also cheap. Does high mileage matter?

i'm using pennsoil 10w-30 oil. change it every 3000 with a napa gold filter. check the oil every saturday and top off as needed.
