Gas (Fuel) Tank Question

Today while putting gas in my car ('95 Lumina, 3.1L) someone else at the gas station pointed it out to me that as I was putting the gas in it was dripping out under the car.

There wasn't much I could do at the time so I just stopped putting gas in, put the cap back on, and went to work. When I got to work I looked under the car and didn't see it dripping anymore. It was dripping pretty good while putting the fuel in and there was a good 1 ft circle or larger under the car where it was dripping.

It looks like the pipe from the cap to the tank is what is leaking. The tank has a cover over it so I couldn't really see it's overall condition but the pipe is rusted pretty good (what isn't under these cars!).

My question is this... is the tank and this pipe all one piece or are they separate? I just got home from work about 45 minutes ago and can't really look now. I am going to look closer at it tomorrow during the day to see where exactly it is leaking.

If my tank is in good condition and they are separate parts I will replace only the pipe to save the money. I looked at Rock Auto for a fuel tank and the pictures don't show the pipe(s), but I didn't see a listing for it, that is why I am asking.

The filler neck/vent tube is an assembly, and is attached to the tank at the bottom by two rubber hoses.
the filler neck assy is GM part# 10216311 and dealer retail is only $45.90.
the rubber hoses are GM#10405865 (fill hose) $37.89
GM# 10199272 (vent hose) $9.84
You could probably get the rubber hoses in bulk from the aftermarket to save some money, just take yours with you to match up.

Is this filler/vent assembly a dealer only part? I havn't been able to find a listing for it on any type of site.

Yes, it is dealer only. since it's only $45, go order one. Check the rubber hoses first obviously, if their deteriorated, replace them. Inspect the metal tubes, if rusted, they are the problem. Get it fixed soon, fuel and a hot exhaust don't mix.

Already ahead of you. I pulled my Lumina in the garage the other morning and backed it up onto my car ramps. Got a funnel out and my 5 gallon gas can and dumped some in.

It started to drip as soon as I started to pour it in. So I looked under and it is the pipe going to the tank. It goes down and then makes a 90 degree bend and that is where it is leaking.

On my way to work that day I stopped at the dealer and ordered it. Also while under there after I found where it was leaking I looked at the rubber hoses, both are still in good enough condition for me.

The gas was leaking on the driver side, far from the exhaust. Nothing I would worry about there.

cool, didn't know if you had a model with dual mufflers, as that would make it a top priority. I'd still change it ASAP, with today's gas pricing, it'll pay for itself in no time.

Yeah no kidding. Luckily it only leaks while putting the gas in so unless I have to put more in the car I am okay... The part should be here some time this week and then I'll change it the day after.

It just sucks when both of your cars need parts. :)
