'06 Taurus Recommended Upgrades

Hi all. I just purchased an '06 Taurus SE 3.0L V6 Gas about 2 months ago. It was a lease car for less than a year, and had 17,000 miles at the time-of-purchase. It now has 22,600 miles.

I have already replaced the stock spark plugs with Bosch Platinum +4's (I know I could do better). I plan to switch to synthetic MobilOne oil on my next oil change (unless you would advise otherwise).

I would like to upgrade my car so that (a) it lasts as long as possible, and (b) it gets somewhat better performance while maintaining some kind of middle ground between responsiveness and mileage.

My question is this: what further (and what first), would you recommend upgrading in order to reach my objectives of a long life, reliability, performance, and economy?

I use Mobil1 in all my cars and am pleased with it. Make sure you use an oil filter with a check valve as well.

As for performance mods, the first steps would probably be to get a free-flowing air intake (either a cold air intake or low restriction drop in filter) and a free-flowing exhaust. The engine in your car is essentially a pump, and it can only move as much air as it can take in and push out. Before any other mods will do much for you, you need to be able to let the engine breathe.

A transmission cooler as previously mentioned is probably the single most important item you can add to a Taurus.

Less than fifty bucks and a couple of hours time max.

One other thing that can help it is a perfromance program via an X Calibrator II that changes the factory shift points and duration of the shift. Fuel curves and timing can be changed also but the tranny part will help extend the life. It will cost about $350.00 but is definately a good deal.
