The 9th digit on the 1996 Geo Metor HB is a number on my VIN but I am trying to buy one from a lady who tells me the VIN and its 9th digit is an X (hers is a 4dr sedan)but should that be...it is the only diiference in VIN that I can see but carfax says that VIN is invalid.

Thanks,
Jeff

The 9th digit is a vin check no. I show a 6 for a 1996.
Maybe she is reading it upside down. No. 6 filped over = 9

The 6th vin no of a 5 is a 4 dr sedan.
Post back the first 11 digits of vin no and I wiill see if I can break it down.

SOMETHING NOT RIGHT. The 9 no should be a digit and a 6 far as i can figure out.
Is she getting the vin no off of registration papers or the car vin plate?
Here is the vin break down. in a pdf.

See I thought so too...I looked on eBay at some that were completed and looked at the Vins and there were some that had X as the 9th digit. All of them that did were coupes and not hatches. This is troubling...I really can't pass up the car for what she wants. The VIN on the dash matches the one on the title when I went and looked at it today.

You might have a dealer check it or insurance co. agent.
But I can not get the no to fit vechicle for some reason.
I ran it threw a salvage yard vin id and it kicked back as not a good vin.

Did the door panel have a vin sticker and a manf date on it?
Also someplace there is a hidden vin no stamped on frame.
Usually only state law enforcement knows where.
Let us know how it goes.
Good luck

I asked the place where she had bought the car from and they said it was a clear title and they also told me that that X (as the 9th digit) signifies sedan or coupe version which makes sense from what I have seen.

I am happy with my new purchase :D
