i have a 92 lumina. 3.1L base model so its got no RPM guage and the speedo only goes up to 140km/h i was wondering if i got a new speedometer would it be hard to install? and would i be able to put it behind the glass and make it look half decent without too much trouble? has anyone on here installed a new speedo in their lumina?

I would leave it alone. Changing out the speedo isn't going to make your car go any faster. If you must add anything, add things that are more important, like a temp. guage or maybe a tach. Those can be added easily without worrying about making them fit.

someone i know has a tack on this civic that he put on. its strapped to the steering colum and stick our on an angle to the left. its probably the dumbest looking thing i have ever seen in my entire life. so no. if i install any guages i want them in the guage cluster.

reason i ask is because the speedo only goes up to 90m/h and if i drive faster then that the needle falls down on the right and wont go back when you slow down. pain in the ass to open up the dash just to push it back.

hey man, ebay for a guage cluster from a lumina euro. Those came standard with tachs i believe, and even went higher than 90, but im not sure. Worth a shot. It will bold directly in, but may have to change some connector pin locations, or something to make it work right. I think the outline was posted here a while back if you to a search for tach or tachometer.

IF you can scour a salvage yard, get the cluster and the harness end from the Euro/Z-34 donor car so you can rewire your existing one to match the pin locations. Then you'll have to buy new sensors to replace yours designed for idiot lights to work with guages (idiot light sensors are on/off, guage sensors are variable output to operate the guage).

uhh i dont know what pins your talking about. i dont know much about guages. same goes for the idiot lights and stuff. however im going to a scrap yard tomorrow to get myself some wheel covers so il have a look see to try and find a euro or z34.

and whoever said that euros come with tachs was right. my friend had a euro of the same year and the guage went to 180 k/h (im in canada so i donno miles) and had a tach, temp guage and voltmetre too. if i can find one il try to wire it up where my old one was and hope it works. i cant imagin why i would have to change the speed sensor. and for the tach, is it one of those cases where the wireing for it is there but my modle just dident come with the guage? in which case i would just have to connect it?

ok i did some searching on here and found that some people are having problems with the speedometre reading the correct speed. and i also learned that my lumina only has a temp warning light and now a guage. thats ok because i dont really care if it tells me how hot my car is. i only really need to know my speed, how much gas i have and a tach would be nice. aparently wireing the tach is just a case of adding an extra wire to a white wire somewhere (i forgot what i read already). man it would be nice if i could talk to someone who has done this. also if the speedometre is not correct but still works, cant i just get it calibrated at a shop with a dyno once its in?

Yes, a shop can recalibrate the speedo if necessary. The pins I'm referring to are the connector pins on the cluster wiring harness. The colors of the wires will be he same, but they are in different positions from the Euro cluster to the standard cluster. You would have to remove the metal pins from the plastic connector in your car, and reposition them to match the order they are in the harness you cut from the cluster donor car. If you don't, it won't work. The alternative would be to splice the donor car's connector to your cars wiring, but I STRONGLY advise against it. The tach wire should already be there, it just isn't used in your car.

Seems like a lot of work for nothing. Is there a way to swap out the odometer? I'm not sure about laws regarding it, but you would be showing incorrect mileage if you didn't swap it out. I'd still just get a small aftermarket tach, temp guage, etc and mount them on the vertical pillar between the windshield and the driver's side window. They make housings for things like that so that they look good. It'd be a lot easier to just go that route.

yeah, but it looks like absolute ass. I'd stick to the origional plan, all the wires are there, you just have to know and understand what each one is there for and snip and solder accordingly. Its not that hard. Someone also posted hw to modify a cutlass digital dash to work in a lumina. If i remember right he outlined everything to the T and showed a picture of the final product, looked pretty good if i do say so myself.

Hey blake, why did you change your signature? I liked the "your car has to go fast to look good..."

true that. its always fun to win against a honda whos exaust pipe is bigger then your wheels and still stay under the speed limit. :grinyes:

A fart can muffler and an APC sticker on mommy's old Civic/Accord does not qualify you as an Import tuner. Vin Diesel will not be impressed. Make it go fast, not look or sound fast (annoying?).

I just laugh when i drive by cars like that that have stalled 0ut on the road and think to myself "HMmmmmm, wonder how many valves that guy needs now, probably broke a timing belt and bent valves." So much money is spent making the car look like ass and sound like its farting, and they forget to do preventative maintenance. There's a honda in the auto repairables section of my paper, "1995 honda civic, (however many miles), great shape, broken cam" I called the guy on it as I could use a good gas milage vehicle. It turned out to be, I dont remember the motor he said it had, but i looked it up to be an interference type. There's about 12 new valves of the 16 it needs. LOL, i just wonder how one breaks a camshaft in a vehicle. Never change the oil or what?
