SS/SC Vs. 350z

This one happened last Sunday against a good buddy of my g/f's.
It's white, with 19x10's out back and 19x8's in front (these rims look spectacular on this car.) It's also got a Borla catback and a CAI from one of the more popular companies and it's the 5 spd auto as well.
Now then, on to the race.
We were heading from a mall to an Infinity dealership that he wanted to check out because he said that there was supposed to be a ton of 350z stuff there. On the way there I had my g/f call him and ask for a quick run on the highway because I'd never run a Z before. After some griping from the old man (he's 31) my g/f convinced him to run against me. We lined up at about 65 mph or so and let traffic get a half mile or more ahead. I was holding 3rd at around 4300 rpms, wating for him to make a move. Nothing...damn old man has no backbone. :grinno:
I blip the throttle a couple times to entice him, still nothing. Now I'm about 8 feet ahead of him and very confused. Well, now that he's got me confused he decides it's a good time to punch it...greeeeeat. I don't manage to get on the throttle untill he's got his back bumper to my front, which gives him a nice half car lead untill his pull is stopped. All through 3rd gear we pretty much just stayed at that same distance, untill the very top of 3rd, where I managed to gain some distance back. With a nice, clean powershift into 4th I manage to make some ground back and am now pulling him in at a slow, but steady rate. I'm now at 115+ and have pulled even with his front bumper and am starting to inch on him when we both notice that the traffic that was a good ways up the road is now within spitting distance. Brakes in both cars are rapidly applied and the cars are haulted back to sain speeds.
When we reach our destination I asked him if he was using his manumatic shift option and if he left his a/c on. No he wasn't shifting his car and yes he left his a/c on...damn old man forgot how to race. Fun run and our buddy was impressed.
Oh yeah, I had one passenger, he had none and my a/c was off. ;)

nice run, not the best evenly matched sitiuaition, but you could tell that any time you come across a 350Z, you got a good race on your hands

Dunno what to say about the 350Z. They seem slow when I race them. I've heard that they handle well though.

I do believe that they are a lot like the early NSX cars in that their straight line power is seriously outdone by their handling capabilities. Not to say they are slow cars, but one would think that 6 cyl, 2 seat sports cars in their price ranges would be a good amount quicker. (especially the NSX at over $60,000)
Either way, I still think the 350z is a good value and an awesome overall vehicle...I suppose this is why I see about 30 of them every day.

yeah, good car, but overall, definantly not hte fastest thing on the road...(espeically when compared to a modded LS1 lol)
very nice run with the SS though, they are pretty evenly matched cars on the highway

I just don't understand the 350Z. I mean it supposedly has 300hp, but yet it runs 14's from what i've seen. I mean don't get me wrong, they are pretty peppy, just not as peppy as say the 300ZX TT, which has similar horsepower.
I've heard the track edition 350Z's are sick on a roadcourse though. I'm sure one would hand me my ass on one.

Nice race BullDog. I like 350Z's but am all surprised they dont have a faster ET with 300hp. Unless its overrated which I have never heard.

cool race, 350Zs arent my style, wayyyy to small. I got in one at the Detroit auto show, when i got out, i hit my leg on the door and caused a nice long bleeding scrape. They look cool, but if i wanted a tiny sports car, theres alot better out there.

That's ok, cause the multiple buslengths i'd put on your mid 14 sec. sorry ass excuse for an SS badged car will make me feel mighty confident in my manlihood. :D

ooh nice comeback :iceslolan . agreed tho, dont 350s run like low 14s? id think it would be alot more with that 300hp and they dont weigh too much...

i'm the same way man,, dunno why. altho i think both cars are pretty shitty at getting their power to the ground, in my humble much faster car's opinion :evillol:

I'm surprised it was so close. I wonder how much different it would be with a manual transmission and a decent driver. I doubt AC makes much difference but I could be wrong. In the STI it automatically shuts off the AC compressor when you go full throttle so you can't forget!

lol, I would bet my pink slip that mine would KILL yours in an autocross course. I have been quite a few times and where the TA has shortcommings in handleing it makes up for it in power. With 315's front and rear with beefy swaybars and lowered you would be surprised at the handling of a fbody. :grinyes:

I'm sure the 200+ whp you have over him would probably help. If you don't know Bulldog, he has one of the sickest cams for the LS1. That cam alone has added over 70whp to F Bodies alone, let alone torque. I'd add it, but it's not exactly smog legal in California.

70whp from a Cam?
I want a magic cam too! :(
LS1... is there anything it can't do? Well... it never did the dishes for me when I had mine... so yeah, it's pretty much useless around the house.

Yeah, too bad you couldn't even use the seats for the backyard, cause they're too damn uncomfortable in the Camaros.
What moron designed the seats in those cars? Obviously it was someone that didn't take long road trips.

That would be soo awesome. I could see it now, a front wheel drive car with a 572 block. That sucker would accelerate hard out of the hole ~ and into the opposing racers lane through massive torque steer ~ = Da Win :D Cause winnings winning, whether it's through a fender, or a car.

It is prob more like 250+whp.:grinyes: It is a mean combo to say the least, the first guy to dyno with this same setup just laid down 490rwhp and 422rwtq from a stock cube LS1. TSP just came out with these heads and they are making insane hp and torque.

He actually had the setup first. I copied him... His best dyno was 491hp and 422tq at the MFing wheels. Same heads, cam, intake, TB, fuel system, and tuneing from TSP/PRC. I got all the little details before I started spending money. My bank account went down about 4K this month but I think it was worth it.

valvesprings
seats
retainers
pushrods
ported ls6 oil pump
gaskets
better lifters that won't collapse
and tuneing to benefit from the swap.
My first sig was too long so I had to shorten it to the main parts.:)

I can't say enough about tuning. Any type of power/performance upgrade you do to your car. In order to get the most out of it. You must, must, must tune it! I've seen so many stangs from AZ that run around H/C/I with no tuning done. And they are out beating on their cars with who knows what kind of Air/Fuel ratio. Tuning is key! ok sorry for the rant heh.
