This has nothing to do with cars, however I know there is expert electrical know-how on here.. I need to figure out the amp draw of a guitar amp as I'm wiring some circuits for musical play,, I've called the manufacturer, they won't release that exact info, at least that's the story I received in an e-mail.. there's other info, volts, khz,on the label.. I have a spec sheet I printed off the site, any help ???? I've searched thru the web, gotten nowhere, maybe my search criteria is not worded exactly right, gotten all kind of things except what I'm looking for... thanks

I you give me any info you have on the amp, i should be able to help you out. How many watts? what voltage?

Ohm's law, V=IR, Voltage equals Current time Resistance. Similarly, P=IV, or Power equals Current times Voltage. Also, V=I^2R, or Voltage equals Current(squared) times Resistance. So, if you have any two of those numbers, you can determine the current consumption.

For example, if the sticker on the amp says 120 V, 60 Hz, 300 Watts for input, your average current draw would be I = P/V or Current = 300 W/120V = 2.5 Amps.

As for applicable content, these same equations apply to people who want to select the appropriate fuse when adding driving lights, or a car stereo amp, etc.

Honestly I would use an in-line amp meter :-p

But anyways, like Rod said Watts divided by Voltage equals amps and you can check the math by measuring the resistance volts divided by amps = ohms.

Rod, just curious--what do you do for a living?

Hey broken. I think rod just lives to make the rest of us look antiquated.   Sure is good to have him in the forum though.:grinyes:

I'm a Sr. Systems Engineer by title (or as some of my co-workers call me, a Big SysE - "big sissy"), but my degree is in electrical engineering (working on cars is a hobby for me, along with repairing electronic devices, building devices to meet a personal need/scare my wife, etc.).
