Ok this is more of question for a Firebird than a Camaro, but they have the same transmission. (4l60e trans) My wifes car 1995 Firebird formula has developed a issue with the auto trans. It upshifts fine from a stop and downshifts down when applying the brakes like normal, however when I manually downshift the car from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st the car free wheels and the engine does not rev up like it suppose to. When I down shift from 4th to 3rd it works fine. The transmission is not slipping and I just changed the fluid and filter out thinking it was the problem but it's still doing it. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

You know the 4l60-e is works alot better without shifting manually so I never have. Infact its faster just leaving it in drive or overdrive however your problem may be a safety feature more than anything else. Like to make sure the engine doesn't rev too high if the incorrect gear was selected. After all it is a electronic tranny and the shift points are controlled by the PCM.

I don't think it's a safety feature because if you put it in 1st at a stop the car goes and when you let off the gas it doesn't stay reved up it free wheels. Even at low speeds.

What do you mean by "free wheels". Sorry just a term I am not all that familiar with.

Free wheels means the transmission is not using the engine as a brake. Like when you keep a stick car in 1st rev it up and then let off the gas the engine works as brake and slows you down. This car is not doing that. You keep it in first and rev the car up going like 25 to 30 and let off the gas it acts like it's in neutral. (some allison transmissions work this way)
