Starting problems have started with my 01 Escape also. After running for awhile with air conditioning (http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic601376.htm#) on, if I turn it off it wont start. happened twice now in two weeks. Never before. It will crank and crank but wont start., If I let it sit for 15 minutes it will start. NO system light or over heating????
Somebody said something about loose starter cable on an above thread but it doesnt seem logical, it cranks but doesnt turn over??

I did some searches for you. The one fix that I would try came from another fourm.
here it is:
I had the same problem with my 2001 Escape. When it is acting up, if you can get it started by pressing on the gas but when you take your foot off the gas it stalls then it is most certainly the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. Have your mechanic either clean it or replace it (I had it replaced) and your Escape will start like new again! I had the no start problem for 3 months and after several tows into the repair shop, full tune up, several ignition parts -- I finally found the problem online and called the mechanic and had him replace the part and it is FINALLY FIXED - this was 4 months ago and I have not had the problem since.
another:
I had the same exact problem with my 2001 Escape and after many trips (and tows) to the mechanic and changing several ignition parts I found the problem - it's the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. Either have this cleaned or replaced and the problem will disappear. I had the idle air control valve replaced 1 month ago and my Escape starts and runs like brand new again :)

I have an 01 Escape also. I replaced all of the above and it worked fine for a week and then right back to the same problems. My truck is now getting its fuel pump replaced by the dealer. The problem was leak down which is when the fuel pump doesn't maintain the proper pressure to start the vehicle initially. Not sure if its the same problem, but ask your mechaninc to check it out.

To see if it is loss of pressure in the rail try this:
*turn key on and wait, crank, and then turn off
*repeat until started
*when you do this, you are represurizing the fuel rail
The other way is to open the fuel rail at the engine and install a T with a fuel gage. Run the engine, turn off, and watch pressure gage.

I own 2001 2 liter escape done 240,000 km.
Try cam or crank sensor located bottom and top side of engine, it is a magnetic type of sensor, not expensive, pls try it
