99 GT to a 97

So this may just be an outright stupid question, but how many parts would be interchangeable from a 99 GT going into a 97 GT? Would the engine and tranny fit into the 97? At all, modifications or not? What about any other parts. Yeah i'm sure y'all would say drive the 99, but can't. Everything works, but the paper trail on the 99 isn't legite, so I could never have it legal on the road, so it's just sitting around collecting dust. And I don't want that if I can help it. I've got a 150000 on my 97 and it'd be really sweet to swap out some major parts if possible, and nothing beats free.

You should be good for at least another 150,000 miles on the '97. Save the parts and use later.

I wish I could say that. The tranny is on it's last leg. That's the biggest thing I'm worried about. That's why it'd be nice if the 99 motor and tranny could go right into my 97.

Well, I don't know about using parts off a car that has questionable title so I am not commenting on that.

But here is your problem addressing just the transaxle issue. Your '97 has a 4T60E tranny and the '99 has a 4T65E. Therefore, you will not be able to do the swap without replacing the complete wiring harness which includes to the tranny, PCM module, engine compartment fuse box and into the dash, etc. from the '99 to yours. That is just one obstacle. There are more.

I agree. It seems like an exercise in futility at times. But there are parts he can salvage from the '99 model. Parts is parts. :dunno:

Yeah back in the day certainly was nice. Take out a 305 and throw in a 500 all in an afternoon. Too much electrical mumble jumble to fool around with nowadays.

I agree with what Bob says. Using parts from a questionable source car is BAD NEWS. Many parts have the original car's VIN number on them, so if you use them they can be traced. Lets say the "questionable" car is stolen, and you install parts from it on your car. you could be arrested for possessing stolen property or grand theft auto.

He is also right on the trans, the 97 is different than the 99. There are many revisions between the 97 and 99 models, so other than body panels, engine and suspension pieces, it's a crap-shoot as to whether they are interchangeable.

I agree and see no problems with at least the engine in its entirety. I know the MAF sensor is different on the throttle body bewteen a '99 and '97.

Which '97 model GP had the ugly a$% front end? Was it the SE only or was the GT in the same category. I know the GTP has the revised front end.

The early SE's had the ugly front but the GT's have always had the same front as the GTP. I'm not sure what year they all had the same front but I think it was 99 or later.

I know it's not a stolen car, it has just been used as a bartering deal, more or less, a couple times. The guy that has it owns his own body shop and would sell it, but knows he can't because the only people that have any idea of the history of it are long gone now, and can't get a title of any sort. So I'm not worried bout using parts off it. If it was stolen then I wouldn't have even asked the question. Been in my fair share of trouble and definitely don't want anymore. Especially if it'd risk losing my baby, and watching them tear it down in front of me:disappoin

I would be very embarrassed driving one around town. But at least the Pontiac design engineers realized that eventually and canned it.

BTW - Everytime I see an '04 and up GP I laugh. They missed the mark on that one too.


Back to topic, no one cares about the history of the car and if you say it is not hot then we believe you. We're here to give advice on the feasibility aspects which doesn't look good for all the trouble.

Certainly off topic but what if they put the ugly front on the ugly rear. They might lose another $10 billion.
