Ok so i found out that all of those AC problems ive been having are caused by a leak in the compressor. my mechanic is doin the job for $500 for a new one so i jus want to know if thats fair.

If he is putting a brand new compressor on and recharging the system that is a fair price. Make sure if the compressor failed that he cleans the internals of the system correctly and replaces the filter and the air dryer otherwise it will eat up the new compressor. If it is just a leak in the compressor and the compressor did not fail then the above will not be necessary but $500 seems fair for this repair.

yea he will be recharging the system too, the compressor looked pretty shot, it had all that oil from the freon all over it.

I agree the price is reasonable. The compressor alone is around $300.00.
Make sure he checks the expansion valve and replaces the accumulator which is what GTPDad mentioned as the receiver-drier. It is common practice to do that when replacing the compressor or you may have problems again.
