'99 Cav Alternator Problem

I have a 2.2L. The alternator went out, I replaced it, it lasted a couple of days & stopped charging. I took it off, had it bench tested & the alternator is good. Talked to the alternator repair shop, where I bought it, and was told the small red wire that plugs in should have 12v and if it didn't to trace it down or just jump it to the output terminal to get the 12v. Well, the red wire had 4.8 volts, so I cut it and jumped it.
Everything seemed to be fine, 13.8v at the battery (new battery) with engine running, 12.5 without engine running. But, last night, with lights on, it seemed to be loading down because lights went dim. Brought it home and put a charger on it and this morning the alternator was warm to the touch. (it has a 12m warranty)
So, something is still wrong. What do I need to do?
Thanks,

sounds like you have a wiring that is shorting out your alt...you might need to take it to a elretrical shop and have then test you wires..
