I bought a used 2005 Jeep Liberty for my wife to tool around in. It only came with one key, the kind with the remote entry system with the key built into it. My wife went to make some extra copies of the key at Home Depot and they said they can't do it, all '05 Liberty keys need to be bought from Jeep for around $150 so you get the right chip?? Anybody know how I can get around this and buy some cheap key copies that will unlock and start this Liberty? Thanks.

Well the key runs about 35 bucks. thats it. they program it with the ignition(sp) mod. it takes a few min to do. dont spend 150 bucks. and yes, only jeep can make copies for the jeep.

My wife called Jeep yesterday and they said they charge $134 for the key and $20 to program it? Are you saying I can buy the key somewhere else for $35, then take it in for programming?

Do not waste your money at the dealership, ANY decent locksmith shop can duplicate that key AND program it for $70 or less. Call around to some locksmiths and get some price quotes.

Alright, we finally resolved the key copying issue. My wife found a key that would work on ebay, I believe it was through amazingkeys.com. She got the programmable key for about $20 with shipping. I took it to our Jeep dealer today and they cut it and programmed it for $23. So still too $#*@ expensive for a key copy (around $43 total), but beats paying $150!

On a side note also found out about two recalls for the '05 Liberty....one regarding a tranny cup plug bracket and another on the lower ball joints. They did the tranny bracket on the spot, but had to order the parts for the ball joints. Just in case any of you didn't know about those recalls....
