The legal limit in most states for treadwear is 1/16 of an inch of tread left. You can do the penny test to see if a tire needs replacing: Stick a penny upside-down into the groove of the tread, if you can see the top of Lincoln's head above the tread - time to replace.

Yokohama H4 is a pretty good tire. Same with with Bridgestone Potenza, or anything made by Michelin. Check tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) to see a good listing of tires, & you can also read customer reviews about different tires.

Another nod for the H4's. I got mine from tirerack.com for about $220 shipped to my front door. Took them to my mechanic and got them mounted and balanced for $10/tire.
