ok, so here is the deal. I've got a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am (automatic) It was running fine a few days ago, then the battery light came on, I got it home and noticed a few fuses were missing so I bought new ones and put them in, and now it will not start. I put the key in the ignition and the oil and battery lights come on, but when I turn the key to start it all the lights die and nothing happens, I tryed jump starting the thing but it still didn't work (although when it was hooked up to the jumper cables the lights on the dash were brighter) I've tryed starting it in park and neutral, but neither worked. The alternator is new. The only thing I can think of that might have caused it was that I had to reconnect the radio (so I might have accedentaly disconnected something?) and that the battery is indeed dead. I checked all the fuses and they were all in good condition and in the right place.

If anyone can help I will be forever grateful, this is my first car and the sooner I get get it running the better, I live out in the sticks so getting it to a mechanic without it starting is a big problem.

Get that alternator retested, because it sounds like it isn't charging anymore. Did you replace it? Was the battery fully charged when it was replaced?

The person I bought the car from had replaced the alternator and the battery before he sold it to me.

OK guys, so I found out that the alternator was the wrong make for my car, so I got a rebuilt one and put it in, now after some time with the jumper cables attached the car will start, I let it idle for about 20 mins last night to recharge the battery, however, this morning its dead again, could the problem be that I need a new battery or is it a faulty connection somewhere?
