hmmm...well, I'm 21 now and started flying during me junior year of highschool, when I was 16. I started out pretty slowly and didn't get my License untill right before I got up here to Purdue. That may have been a mistake, as it cost me more to spread it out like that (over 2 years), but I was paying for a lot of the lessons with my part-time jobs and stuff.
Where do you live right now? Embry-Riddel is a decent school, but I have obvious bias towards Purdue. In all honesty, if you're doing all right in highschool you can probably make it into flight school. I've been surprised at some of the people in my classes...not what I would have expected in arguably the best flight school in the nation. Money could be a problem for many people...this is NOT a cheap major to get into. But the rewards are great. I forget who said "I could get a job, or I could fly for a living. I choose to fly." but it's exactly the truth. Realize that the life can be difficult for a family with you being gone so often...but you get to travel for free, get paid well, and the industry is in desperate need of pilots right now.
Since you've already flown a little, then you know how much fun it can be. I recommend that you not give up on your dream if this is what you really want to do...you may never forgive yourself. At the same time, be sure it IS what you want to do. It's a huge commitment, both financially and in time.

oh I WANT TO DO IT allright!!! I'm not in High School yet tho, next year i will be a freshman. last year i had something like this:
quarters:
1. 3.76
2. 3.97
3. 4.0
4. 4.0
I had a low grade in "bible" [a private school]
i guess that is allright then... I don't care how I get into flying major airlines, as long as I do it. I don't know much, and it's kinda weird because I first got into through a Red Baron game about 4 years ago or something.
I live in Washington... not D.C.

Well, given that, I'd say that you should start saving up all your money right now. Unless your parents are going to pay for it, it'd be real cool to have a big savings account ready when you seriously get into it. I would honestly not recommend you fly too much for the next couple years because you can't get your license untill you're 17 anyways. If, in that time, you could put together $5k to pay for flight lessons, then you could get the license in a single summer or something...which is definitely nice. Arriving at college with your Private is a big help as it puts you a semester ahead, but you don't want to get too much time because most schools want to "train you" in their own ways. In short, they don't want you to have bad habits.
Currently the top 3 flight schools are North Dakota, Purdue, and Embry-Riddel. Each has it's own advantages, but Purdue gives you the most actual flight time and, IMO, the best overall experience. Last semester we had a Vice President from United in that claimed Purdue was, without doubt, in her opinion the best aviation school in the nation...if not the world.

I don't want to really get too rich, i want to be normal, but you don't get TOO rich i guess. Can you tell me about North Dakota, Purdue, and Embry-Riddel? I only heard of Embry-Riddel, and I know nothing about it. I don't want to go to ND, my dad's from there, but we Washingtonions like wetness. Oh yeah, is ND also called Big Ben?

I don't know too much about Embry-Riddel...aside from the fact that they have really poor organizational procedures. 4 times I sent them a letter requesting information on their "4-year flight school", and each time I recieved a brochure for space camp. That pissed me off so I gave up on them. I cannot name a single person from Purdue that has transferred down there, but I do know of at least 3 people here now that transferred from Embry-Riddel.
North Dakota has a very impressive fleet of airplanes, and I understand some nice sim's. Unfortunately, due to the long and snowy winters their students have a much harder time getting actual flight hours than we do here at Purdue. It's a good school, to be sure, but I grew up in Minnesota and South Dakota and really didn't want to go that far away just to find myself knee-deep in snow for 6 months a year. Ever seen the movie Fargo? They weren't kidding, it really does look like that.
Realize this too, when at college you want a well-rounded experience. In this arena, Purdue really excells over the other 2. We have a Big Ten Conference school with excellent football and basketball programs...
If you really want to go to Embry-Riddel, then think about their Arizona Campus. It's in Flagstaff which keeps you out of the extreme heat, gives you a really short drive up the mountain for skiing, and plenty of rock-climbing and hiking in the area (Grand Canyon...) Maybe you like the beach more than I do, but IMO Arizona has a lot more to offer than Florida.

I don't know where I want to go. The only reason I said Embry-riddel is because that's the only one I heard of. Where is Purdue?

Purdue is in West Lafayette, Indiana...almost equidistant from Chicago and Indianapolis. Purdue's flight program accepts about 60 freshmen each year, which means that it can be extremely tough to get into. Fear not, though as I graduated high school with only a 3.3 GPA and less than 1300 on my SAT's. I did have a very long list of extracurricular activities, academic and citizenship awards, and community service hours to include on the application, but those are easy to build up.
Since you're just getting into highschool, now is the best time to start preparing for the acedemics needed. A strong base in Physics, Math, Environmental Science (weather related), and technology is a good start. If you can take Psychology and maybe some physiology it could also help you out. I really like history, philosophy and literature, but they really aren't required too much.

approximately how much do all of those schools cost? i'm not too sure i can afford it. Every heard of Big Ben in moses lake washington? maybe that's ok. i haven't really heard of it but my Dad came home talking about someone who went there. and is it that much of a boost to get a semester ahead? Money is a BIG problem for me, and saving for a private and saving for college at the same time would be impossible!

if you still are here...
Is Purdue even an aviation college? it looks VERY cheap! Everyone i asked was surprised it had anything to do with flight. After some research, it looks pretty easy to get into! This picture of purdue from Encarta is very disheartening about Purdue

A couple of things. A. Note how it says Dairy Center on the left B. I was into the whooel flying thing for a while when I was about your age. I gave it upp and went for cars and now I'm an aspiring German Engineer. Anways I think I can help with the lessons and all. If the states has Cadets programs, join them! I was in Air Cadets for 3.5 years and quit cause of the lack of disicpline and other problems. It is a great experinece and I got to fly in countless Cessnas and such. In Canada, they pay for your liscense, training, and if you want, they pay your way through college. As long as you serve 2 years in the forces. It's really good deal, I just lost interest for some reason. Check it out though!

Hey it happens, but please try to look at the threads date before posting. Anything beyond three months in time passage really is not worth posting too for numerous reasons.
