Hello,
My brother has an 88 or 89 (i am not sure exact year) Astro with the freeze plug out, it is behind the motor mount he said.
The van is mine for the repair. It would make a good work van.
So now the questions,
How hard is it to get to on this van, being behind the motor mount?
Do I have to pull the engine?
Thanks for any help,
Lee

You wouldn't necessarily have to remove the engine, but you would have to raise and support it while you removed the engine mount bolt, clamshell, and probably the lower mount so that there was adequate working clearance. You would likely have some difficulty driving in a welch plug, so you might want to consider an expansion plug (repair type) instead.

Thanks for the reply, and the info on the plug type to use.
I have inserted steel plugs before that had to be hammered in...I assume this is the welch type.
Thanks again,
Lee

Is the leaking plug rotted and seeping, or popped out?

Truthfully, I don't know. I am just going by what my brother told me that the "freeze plug is shot" and radiator needs replaced.
I have not gone out to his place, to check it out my self.
Just trying to decide if I want to mess with it.
Thanks,
Lee
