1991 calais tranny question...

Howdy!
1991 Cutlass Calais. 2.5L carb. Automatic tranny. 217K miles.
Reverse doesn't work well...meaning that if idling in R it will back up slowly and even gain speed if on flat or downhill. If I push the gas it will simply stop going backward at all, but as long as it's just idling it's OK. All forward gears work great.
Fluid is not discolored nor burned. However, previous owner evidently thought the word "MAX" was the correct fill line and didn't notice the arrow, so it's way overfull. Could this cause the reverse problem? Is there an easy way to remove fluid or am I stuck for draining and filling?
Thanks!

Thomas
