My check engine light came on so I took to the shop and they said the knock sensor is bad. What is a knock sensor and what can happen long term if it is not fixed? is it ok to drive to the shop with out messing up anything in the engine. And how hard is it to replace. Thank you 2001 tahoe 5.3l

Welcome to AF on your first post.
You can drive back to the shop BUT.
If it was at the shop why did they not check it then?
Some use two of them.
It or they may under the intake on that one.
But first check the wiring going to it.

Knock sensor is used to adjust timing during detonation events when the engine is running.
Some engine damage may occur if your engine is detonating for a long period of time.
The 5.3 has 2 sensors located under the intake manifold and there are codes for each individual one.
It is also important that the sensor is torqued properly..under or over torqued sensors will not operate properly
