2000 cherokee sport starter problems

My 2000 Cherokee Sport starter was starting to make a grinding noise when starting and shutting it off. So I went and bought a new starter. I do not know why it would make a noise also when shutting it off!! I put the new one in and it seemed to be fine for a couple days. I am now here the same grinding noise, both start-up and shut off. I called where I bought it from and asked if it would need starter shims, they said no!! The fly wheel looked to be in good shape. It also sounds like it is winding more when you start. Anybody have any clue what is going on??

If you,ve already replaced the started only thing I can think of is possible teeth missing on fly wheel. Do a 360 deg. check.

Also was selenoid replaced with started? Bad selenoid can cause intermittant or improper engagement which would explain disengage grind noise.:uhoh:

I had that problem on 97 model. It was the ignition key switch.
It wouldn't release the starter. Mine was so bad it kept the starter running while the car was going and blew the circuit breaker. Big hassle, but had it fixed at dealer because the Jeep was down in SoCal when it happened. Had to get towed and get a rental car.
