2004 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Ecotec Manual Mods: I/E Pulleys
vs
1986 Chevy Camaro 305 v8 Auto Mods: K&N and Chip
First race: 40mph roll he jumped the gun got half a car on me and stayed there because my dumb ass had the A/C on. :banghead:
After that we flew around for a while because my friend is an idiot. He kept punching it every chance he could and I was catching up everytime.
But we kinda got one more race if you wanna call it that.
From about 35 We both punched it. I was behind the maro and we were passing up about 4 or 5 cars. (no I don't do this all the time) But before we got around the cars I was catching him so I had to let off so I didn't hit him. But he kept going so I got on it again(fair?) But it was a one lane road and I was on the wrong side going around a turn about 90 so I let off so noone would die.lol But I was catching up again. Even with him on the inside lane of the turn.
The kid won't admit my car is faster, even though all these races were on the way home from the track.:screwy: and my best was 15.3@87 his was 15.5@85 (It was hot and humid out. I normally run 15.0's)
But what are ya gonna do?:shakehead
BTW:this camaro owner also thought his old 3.4 AUTO!!! Camaro was god and talked shit on me all the time, but would never race me.

Be safe man.
But nice kill. Those 305 Autos weren't anything to write home about. My friend had a 305 TA and before he dropped a built 350 in, it was a dog for an 8 cylinder.

I'm going turbo though so soon this will change. (already ordered)

yeah be careful man, last thing we need is for someone to die street racing or hear about you on the news.
As for the turbo, i would be alittle weary right now, over on jbody.org a good handful of Ecotec engines have been blown with boost in the last few months, many of them only running 6-12 PSI. You should go read up on it first and try to figure out where they went wrong, or if the block isnt as strong as GM made it out to be.

Irocs aren't that bad for their day and age. A guy I know from another board was running high 14's with an automatic one, and he had the 305 block (He had a cam on it though, and some bolt ons). Bone stock, for this day and age, it will get trumped by most everything that runs in the 14's. They ran a low 15 sec. 1/4 mile stock, with the 5 speeds running high 14's (I believe later on in 91 they actually had 230hp).
Anyways, i'd say good kill at the track, but honestly racing from a roll against that car is probably gonna go in that car's favor. I've raced cars that had better power to weight ratios then me on the street, and from a roll. They'd probably beat me pretty good from a dig, but they raced me from a roll and I won. Gotta remember that a roll race favors the high horsepowered car, not the car with the best power to weight ratio (Provided of course that the car isn't moving a huge frontal area, and that it isn't ridiculously heavy ~ i.e. GT500).
Race him again on the freeway. My guess is that he will beat you, but not by much. Just remember that roll races are typically gay, and running from a dig is where it is at, as it involves the most skill :D

Ok, sorry. hopefully you guys can excuse my ignorance to the whole Z28 thing. next time we are on our way to the track I will see if he wants to run a FAIR race from a roll. maybe like 40 or so. But I know for a fact that I'll beat him. Maybe I'll try to get it on tape for you guys. but that would mean an extra person in my car=not good.
Like I said we both punched it and if I hadn't let off the gas I would of rammed into the back of the Camaro. He trapped 85 I trapped 87 that day.
besides I don't have anything to prove to this kid. He just got his license back. (lost it for a year) if that tells you anything...
Hers' what would happen if we raced from a roll; We would race and even if I was ahead as soon as I let off the gas or run into the governor he would surely keep going and say that I "couldn't hang" or couldn't keep up or whatever... So I think I'll just try to line up against him at the track.
Regardless it is sad that he is trying to compare his v8 camaro to a 4cyl Cavalier...haha That's alright like I said, there's a little present in the mail that will even out the playing field!
That's cool tho. I didn't know about that... a roll gives the advantage to the higher hp car... It makes sense.
Peace

Yeah the author missed some of the other famous excuses. I'll list them all to my knowledge:
1. Spark plugs are fouled.
2. Boost Leak (A certain member here knows all about it)
3. A/C was on
4. Car needs a tune up (More then just the typical spark plugs)
5. Car is pulling timing (Then why did you race it)
6. Traction control was on.
7. Missed a shift (Why is this used when someone raced the guy 3 times and lost?)
8. Didn't hear the 3rd honk, guy took off early
9. Tires don't grip
10. Clutch is slipping
11. Differentials blown out
12. Too much gas in my tank
13. I had an additional passenger(s) in the car.
14. The floormat got in the way of the gas pedal.

Don't speak that way about Mushashi J/K
I figured that the oil change was covered in the tune up part.
I try to avoid making excuses, then again I typically end up being paired with either much slower cars or faster cars on the average. I really haven't had a close race, as per say, in a long time.

no actually they werent, the engine just isnt holding up very well. Some of these guys with blown engines were running no leaner than 11:1-12:1 the whole time. They do Dyno tune the cars, and with HPtuners software, its very easy to put the AF exactly where they want it. Just for some reason they engines keep blowing up, i think like 4-7 ecotecs have blown up this summer on that website alone. One just blew a few days ago, with only 10 PSI. Another thing a few of the engines blew when they werent even under load, just cruising.

15.3@87>15.5@85 everytime.
and if he wants to compare fastest time slips then I am still half a second faster. (his best is 15.4)
As for the turbocharger issue. I am getting a wideband O2 sensor to make sure everything is ok. Besides I won't be running much boost right now(6 or 7psi). I have a engine in the garage I'm rebuilding so after that is ready to go I will crank up the boost. It's a relatively reliable setup off a saab. Cast manifold... smaller turbo and such. So hopefully mine will stay together.

I don't know anything about the ecotecs, but sounds like something is definitely up, what's the cr on those? Maybe the internals just can't handle the extra power, even with a good tune. Everything has it's limits, if the tunes are good, then they have apparently reached that engine's limit and need to back it down a bit to keep them alive. Or rebuld them with forged internals :iceslolan Are all of these blown engines from the same tuner?

I find it hard to believe that the ecotec can't handle boost. I've heard that that engine is more stout then even the Poopras, and as I recall Lingenfelter was racing in a 1000hp one when he ended up getting into a coma, and subsequently dying thereafter. My brother was thinking about swapping in an ecotec in his 95 saturn, with something called the monster block (Forged internals, lower compression ratio).
It's all in the tune. Most engine failures are due to people not looking over what's going on in the engine. As stated by Bad360R/T it's probably because they had knock retard.

the 305 f bodys with a auto are like what? 18 second cars stock? lol
Whoa whoa whoa there tatman. don't give those ratty engines that much credit. Lets just stick with a nice safe and even 20 seconds in the 1320.
God those things are aweful. :disappoin
Edit: To answer some of the blown-up ecotec concerns, most of it is the pistons and rods. The stock pistons in the 2.2's will become unstable at around 250 bhp. I'm sure that they arent very happy even at just 230 or so either. The blocks and heads are supposed to be extremely stout and will handle a ton of pressure.
What parts on the cavy's ecotecs let loose, jayson?

stock compression on the 2.2L ecotec is 10:1, yes every engine that blew was from a different tuner. But i also have to admit some ecotec engines are runnig very well on boost, one guy was running 19 PSI on the stock block and hitting 11's. The engine only blew when he put it up to 21 PSI. Then just a few days ago a guy running 10 PSI blew his engine while cruising normally, went to shift and the engine just shut off. Another guy threw a rod through the block, it seems that rods are going, most of the engines ive seen that were blown up had a hole in them.

Yeah, it seems to be a lack of strength on the bottom end. These things arent built with f/i in mind from the factory. They do hold up extremely well to f/i when the internals are built though.

AC does take about 10-15% of engine power no ? But this made me smile too. You can race with AC on, and when you really need some power turn it off-----> Nitrous effect haha.

I believe there was supposed to be a Ford truck of some sort that would do something sorta like this. Was supposed to last for 30-40 seconds, then take a couple min to recharge. I think it was the truck that SVT was supposed to make, then SVT was shut down.
I also notice a huge difference when racing with my a/c on, as appossed to having it off. It could literally be the difference in losing a race against a close match. It's still a funny excuse though.

I test drove a POS 87 IROC once. The owner had dropped the idle to about 450rpm to "make it sound like a 350" and it had a stripped out interior. I couldn't get the tires to break loose and it didn't feel any faster than my Crown Vic
