Im thinking of maybe getting a 3000gt vr4...i've always wanted one....I messed around at an auction one day and missed the chance to get a stealth with 180k for 2,000 dollars.
but anyway, im looking on autotrader and it doesnt tell whether the car is a vr4...is there a way to tell by looking at the engine? or are there any emblems on the body? thanks.
and is it even possible to get mid 90s vr4s for under 10 grand? how bout under 15?

Yes it is quite possible to get one for under 10k or 15k, I suggest you read the FAQ, there is alot of good stuff in there. I'd personally aim for lower than 180k, especially at auction, where you don't get to test drive it. These cars are average on reliability...meaning if you take care of them, they work great, if you beat on them, it will show. At 180k, if htat car had taken a beating, even at $2k, it might not have been worth it.
If you want us to check out hte pictures on the car, any engine bay shot will be a dead give away on whether its a TT or DOHC or SOHC.

vr4 engine bay:

Notice the black plastic pipe that looks like an upsidedown 'Y' to the right of the battery, coming off the throttle body. That is a dead giveaway that it's a TT, as that is the piping coming up from the intercoolers.
DOHC non turbo engine bay:

Now this has a chrome intake pipe, but you still get hte idea, notice the air flows straight from the intake, directly through that pipe to the throttle body. There aren't excess pipes for the turbos and intercoolers.

Unless it has aftermarket rims the Vr4 will have larger wheels. I think the 1st gens had 17" and after that they were 18''s. Otherwise the SL's/Bases had 16"'s. If its an automatic, its a dead giveaway that its not n/a (non-turbo model) because VR4's/RT/TT's were never given the option of an ATX.

Completly ture, but just FYI. It seems that autotrader selects "Automatic Transmissions" by default on TT 3/S's and apperently wont let the seller change it.

thanks for the breakdown...i have one more question not addressed in FAQ. does the 3000gt not have turbo lag due to twin turbos? and if i do the free boost thing will it make a 93 almost as fast as a 94... o and can an above average height person fit in the car... like 6'2

If you do the free boost mod it will be equal to the 2nd and 3rd gen 3/S. And the turbos on 3/S's are very small and dont even really have turbo lag. They do, but its almost unoticable. And I want to correct my last post. Before I said, "If its an automatic, its a dead giveaway that its not n/a (non-turbo model) because VR4's/RT/TT's were never given the option of an ATX." What I meant to type was that if it IS an automatic it is a n/a SL or base. And that all twin turbos are manual transmissions (at least stock...without a twin turbo conversion on a ATX SL or base).

i think most of the people on here are around the 6' range if im not mistaken...too lazy to look back in the "face to a name" thread though lol...
all turbos have lag, but, like said above, these are small, so lag is at a minimum. Unless your below 2500 theres not any at all really. The turbos in the 3000gt are identicel (sp?), with one per 3 cylinders...so its not like a setup where theres a smaller turbo and a larger turbo in line, where the smaller one spools quickly to prevent lag and the larger one gives power at higher RPMs.
