Check the bulbs, fuses and if that does not help the brake switch and connections.

The turn signal voltage and the stop lamp voltage share the same wire and bulb filament on each side. In other words, you press on the brakes and the stop lamps light on both sides. If you were to signal a right turn at this point, the bulb that had up till now been burning steady with stop lamp juice will now start to blink indicating a right turn. The left side is still burning steady because your foot is still on the pedal. Bottom line is turn signal use of that bulb filament has priority over stop lamp use of it.
This branch distribution of the stop lamp switch juice takes place in the turn signal switch itself. You already know that your stop lamp fuse and switch are good because the center high mounted stoplamp is working.
So, that leaves the turn signal switch assembly as the problem component. I've never seen one that can be repaired, so it's time for a new switch. Because of driver side airbags, that repair is not for the untrained and untooled. Take it to a qualified local repair shop (or the dealer, if you absolutely have to) to have this procedure done.

How did you take the cover off the steering column to get to the switch? Did you have to take the steering wheel off completely?

Options: Have dealer replace switch $300 or more.
Do it your self ... switch costs $70 to over $100, need a steering wheel puller, have to pull the air bag, yada yada yada

Fix it your self with less than $10 worth of parts: Go to a junk yard and get a light pigtail from most any GM product about the same year. I got several and was charged $1 each. Pull your tail light. Look just inside of the original light and there is a "V" that is wide enough and has the clearance for your new pigtail. Take one of the pigtails you just got and using a dremel tool, cut off the "tangs". Use this as a guide to make the whole for it (about 1" if I remember). Once you have the hole about the right size, use your dremel tool to make the holes for the "tangs". Put a screw in the rear of the trunk where the light attaches and ground the new pigtail. Run a wire from the third brake light to each new pigtail and ... you're done ... FOR EVER. From the rear, it looks like exactly like the original set up.
I can provide more detailed instructions and can provide pictures if anyone wants, just email me.
