Hey Folks,
I have recently replaced my exhaust manifold and there was hesitation starting it before this (compression issue), now that the new hardware is there I still have starting problems ( turns over and over then finally it starts)and when she seems to get warm the engine seems to starve for gas. It will die out and at restart it starts but I have no acceleration ability:banghead: (motor dies out). The motor will not let me accelerate to give it more gas. I changed the fuel filter and checked all the spark plugs and distributor per the manuals instructions in the trouble shooting area. Still it dies out. Do I either rebuild the carb or pull out the fast idle jet and clean it. Possibly a float sticking or junk in the needle. Any help would be greatly appreciated for I am a shade tree mechanic and loving the rebuild of this 86 4x4. For it truely is a classic....
Thanks TGW:naughty:

A 20 yr old carb is probably due for a rebuild.
A note on rebuild kits, if the parts guy doesn't ask you for the number from the metal tag on the carb, go somewhere else, he's selling generic kits.
A good parts place will ask for the number so they can give you a kit for your specific carb.

I'm thinking it is about time to rebuild it...And yes, The ID tag is a much needed item as I have found out so far.. Being quite CAR SAVY I know when I get a parts person that got hired due to having a pulse and no knowledge....Thanks for the help....:grinyes:

Well I rebuilt it and it went pretty well although the carb is now on the engine and it will start then stall out, no pedle play, I mean when trying to accelerate it dies.. WHY WHY WHY can't I just wind it up and go......Wishful thinking...:banghead:

Did you check fuel delivery? Is the fuel pump putting out the correct volume of fuel? Are all the cylinders firing? What do the spark plugs look like? Have you checked the timing? Did you make sure there are no vacuum leaks? Have you done a wet and dry compression test? Are the valves adjusted properly?
