Should I buy a 89 Camaro?

Hey everyone. A friend of mine is selling his 89 Camaro. Its a 5 spd with the 2.8L v6 motor. Im gonna go look at it tonight, but i was just wondering if the 89 was a goor or bad year for the camaro. If so, what motors are most common for upgrades. I realize the 2.8 motor has no guts. I currently have a eagle talon tsi awd and have been running mid 12s with it on the 1/4 mile. I have lots of experience with 4 bangers and rebuilding those motors......but would like to get a v8 car. Im thinking either a camaro or a Monte Carlo ss. Any info would be great! Thanks.

I 2.8 is like you said gutless. There isn't a real big aftermarket for them either. If you're wanting a v8 car I would hold out for one in my opinion. A 2.8l Camaro will get you nowhere even near 12's.

i agree with 6, hold out for a v8 equiped car as swaping from the v6 to the v8 is alot more involved and would be more expensive in the long run.

Couldn't i pull the 2.8 out and put a bigger motor in? Iv done motor swaps before and have no problem with doing them so im just wondering what is is needed for a swap? My father has an old 350 kickin around in the garage, and i would put that in if it wasnt too much of a hassle. Thanks

It's a lot of work and based on the availability of 3rd gen v8's, honestly your best bet would be to buy a v8 car if you want a v8 car. In the performance section there is a sticky with some basic info of what is needed to go from a v6 to a v8.

Well yeah ofcourse you can, but to swap it to that v8 you'd have to change the transmission and upgrade the suspension as well, not as simple as swaping out 4 bangers.. but if you've done it before then it wouldnt be any different I guess.

Nice choice
Not to discourage anyone but IMO you'd have to have a really cherry and I mean 0.00% rust free body to make it worthwhile. Or a junk load of time on your hands with nothing better to do.
