There is probably a button on the car where the door connects (at the hinge). when the door is closed the button is pushed and the lights go off. When you open the door the button is released...lights come on. Based on your description of the problem, my guess is that the button is stuck. When the door is open, your button probably doesn't release. Try finding the button (it's usually surrounded by a black rubbery shroud) and seeing if it's stuck. My lumina is quite similar to your monte, so the button should be in the same place.

Well I'll be a..... there is no button that I can see either. I just went out and looked on both sides of my '99 lumina. I can't find a button. I am lost here. My '93 lumina has the button: (I sometimes put my foot on the button to keep the lights off when the door is open). My '99 has a feature which automatically turns all the interior lights off after like ten minutes if a door is left open, (preventing battery drain) so maybe that's why there's no button. I'm not sure if a '95 would have that feature, but it might. I'll keep trying to find an answer to this strange occurance.

I posted a new thread entitled "where's the button" in the lumina forum. Those guys are pretty knowledgeable on most topics. Let's see what they can do with this question. You've got me wondering where my button is!!! :)

I got a response in the lumina forum on the topic. I was informed that the "button" or whatever it is, is part of the latch assembly. That would explain why we couldn't find it. I'll try to mess with mine this weekend and see if I can find it.

well, after checking mine as well. it is in the latch assem. it only goes up 3/4 of the way when the door opens. i can push it up the rest of the way with my finger and the interior light comes on. i sprayed a little WD40 in there and it didn't move any easier. i wonder if there is anything that would make it move easier?

I'm glad you found it, now I'll have to look on mine. Here's part of the message I received: "...the switch is part of the latch inside the door (the greasy piece that actually goes over the pin/striker in the door jam that holds the door closed). His issue could also be the chime/warning module going bad. When the chime module fails, it will allow you to turn the dome on/off manually, but it won't come on when you open/close the door. That's what happened in my Cavalier, until it got so bad the key/lights on dinger started going off randomly too..." I didn't know if you looked in the lumina forum but I thought that might be helpful anyway.
