hello all, i got a 1994 ranger with a 4.0L in it with a manual trans.over the winter the motor blew a head gasket, she's got almost 200,000 on her so i think i'll rebuild it. just wondering if anyone has any good mods for that motor to give it more power. will have to bore out cylinders cause rings grooved them up so i'll already be getting bigger pistons but i've thought about a supercharger and some headers, anyone ever put those on and got good performance out of them.let me know please any help is appreciated. thanks in advance

How much boost you talking about running? Too much boost, you'll need an FMU, chip flash, bigger injectors, hardened internals, lower compression, etc. You might be able to run 3-4PSI depending on how big the injectors are. If they're the grey tops, forget it, ECC will need to be reflashed for bigger injectors. They're only good for about 170h.p. I doubt it though, I believe the engine is around 160h.p.
*Mildly porting the heads, make sure that everything lines up correctly will do some good. A mid/high cam will suprise you, but you'll loose a lot of low end. If you replace the cam, make sure to get stiffer valve springs. If the 4.0L hydrolic lifters are like the 2.9L lifters, you can replace them with those from a 390 ci. Don't skimp on lifters. Headers will give good torque, as they help the exhaust pulses. Be sure to keep back pressure in mind when implementing the exhaust.
A bigger T.B. will give you more top, less bottom, and vise versa. A high performance coil won't do much good on a stock / mildly built motor. Good plugs wires make somewhat some difference. I run normal copper plated autolights/motorcrafts, they do good. Synthetic oil also frees a minimal amount of power.
Be sure to fix what ever went wrong with the cooling system to cause the overheat condition. A bigger MAF will only be required for high amounts of boost. You won't have to worry about adjusting the exhaust or intake diameters unless you increase the amount the engine is demanding, or if you boost the crap out of it. Boring will not give much increase in power or displacement, though stroking (longer throw on crank, shorter rods) will.
