I just recently got into looking up the history of my family name, and I have found out some really cool stuff.
Notably, I am directly related to a guy named Sir John de Graham, who was the right hand man of Sir William Wallace, and fell at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298.
I am also related to the Dukes of Montrose. Montrose being one of the most distinguished families in Scotland.
Anyone else ever do anything like this?

yes, from my dad's side, I would actually be heir to a throne (being the eldest son) in a past small kingdom in India, before british came and colonized it. i dont know enough about it, unfortunately. All i know is the random tidbits of info passed to me from my gramps

We have my family tree dating back to the 500's. It's not completly filled, just as far back as we can go. I'm a distant cousin of President McKinley.

My uncle traced the family tree on my mom's side in detail back to the 1600's when they arrived from Holland to settle the Cape in South Africa. Then vaguely traced us right back to the vikings...

Lets see if I can get this all straightened out.
My mother's side of the family is Irish and they came around the time of the Revolutionary War. It maybe before or after but I don't know.
My dad's side of the family, my grandma, is Cherokee Indian. They came over on the trail of tears and settled north of Tahlequah (capital of the Cherokee Nation).
My dad's side of the family, my grandpa, is English. They first came over on the Mayflower. After a while several of them settled mainly in Virginia. Anyway, before the Mayflower my family dates back to a English nobleman who was big in Whales I think. I'm not sure but I got the history of my family name somewhere.

i've always been very interested in my heritage but unfortuneately all the good info seems to cost money, so i haven't had the privelage of learning too much.
All I want is to be able to trace myself to the soup company with the same name as me so I can get my proper inheritance.... haha. I wish.
Anyway though yeah i'm also really interested in finding my true family crest. I seem to get mixed results trying to find it on my own. I think family heritage is so cool and definitely shouldn't be something forgotten through the generations.

I have found that some of the best places to do family history research is http://www.familysearch.org/ . It is one of the largest archives in the world!
Some interesting things I have found out is that I am related to Davy Crocket! The wild man of the frontier! Oh and my great grandfather was a murder detective durring the 1920's. His revolver has been passed down and my father has it now.
My wife is a real McCoy! Of the feuding familys. I have to make an effort not to piss her off! JK

Hrm, speaking of Mongolians, anyone know if it's true that a fair majority of European decended people can trace thier geneology back to Genghis Khan? I've heard from a few people about this, but have had a hard time beleiving it.

yes, i've heard that too, xcept it was said on The History Channel during a week long special on Great Conquerors. It was one of those pre-commercial "Did you know that..." tid-bits.
