P0440 code costing $700 to fix??

My mom recently took her failing emissions car into a shop to get it looked at. It's a 96 Grand Am 4 cyl. She is getting the P0440 code, i've checked the gas cap and even the testing center said it's sealing ok. The shop tells her that the following needs to be replaced:

*some* vaccuum hoses
Air/Fuel Monitor (the 02 sensor after the cat - 56.99 local parts store)
Canister Purge Valve (32 bucks at local parts store)
Vent Valve
Canister

I've searched the basic auto parts sites to find the vent valve and canister but I am coming up empty, is this an OEM only part? This seems like an awful lot just for that code. The mechanic said that some raw gas got into the canister, so it needs to be replaced. Does $700+ dollars sound right to do this work?

I was hoping to just replace the o2 sensors and hopefully it'll pass emissions. The car has over 100,000 miles on it and she's on a fixed income and I don't have the money to give her to get it fixed.

The canister may a dealer part or a salvage yard may be able to get you on.
The 0 2 sensor I would make sure you really need one.
Fix the canister and vent valve and hoses first and recheck 02 sensor.
700 sounds high.
Get another estiamte and\or post back the parts and labor quoted on first estimate.

Doesnt take that long to replace any of those things either.

The canister costs about $82 from rock-auto.com. $700 is way too high for this repair. With parts and labor it shouldn't cost any more than $300 and that is slight exaggerated. Purchase the parts and repair everything yourself.
I doubt you need the canister itself but the filter may be blocked. The other thing is to replace the vacuum lines since they are the most susceptable to damage. This will probably correct the entire problem.

I also agree with MT-2500 unless you get a code for the O2 sensor then it doesn't need to be replaced. I would have someone else pull the codes and see if you actually have a Bank 1 Sensor 2 code before spending the money.
