Heatwave killed my blower!

OK, here goes. A/C was the best part of my 1994 Trans Sport. No more. Blower kicks on high then proceeds to go from high to low, or off, or med. high whenever it wants. If you turn it off for a few minutes it will come back on high & then do the psycho dance all over again. Any ideas? Blower motor, relay, whatever else may cause this? Tommorow is calling for 100 degrees + & 80% humidity with no A/C! TIA.

Welcome to the forum!

I would look for loose or dirty connections between the speed control panel and the blower motor resistor. If you don't find anything suspect there, I would go for the blower motor. I helped replace a blower motor in my sister's Trans Sport just a couple of months ago after it died. She lives in balmy Florida where A/C is REQUIRED!

Totally agree with GregA. One interesting detail would have been if that dance occured only on the HIGH position or also at any lower setting. Anway, i n any case, the motor is probably the culprit.....but the High Speed relay contact can be also dead--some relays have been seen almost melted with the plastic connector - ....cause on HIGH, the current through this motor is around 25 A and there is no way - in the probability of electric motor design or relay contact of that size- that it can sustain that for very long times: I have always considered this speed for quick response/short time operation...then set for the next lower setting that runs at around 10-12 A. Of course necessities may dictate otherwise...but at a price.

Thanks for the input. I E'Bayed a blower for $20 so by the time it arrives it should be a little cooler to pop it in. Hopefully that will do it. Running the blower on high is a neccessary evil since I don't have dual A/C. On a completely different note I just found out how to pass NOX emmisions testing fairly easily. I failed multiple times, no apparent reason, mechanic says van runs great. Told me to run "emmision pass" by CRC for (1) tank, refill with super, & add a bottle of octane boost. Van passed with flying colors. NJ emmisions are a pain. Thanks again!
