fender removal XJ

I have a 93 Cherokee Sport (XJ) and have a problem with the driver side door hinge -- have the kit to fix it but since the hinge weld is completely broken want to remove the outer skin of the front fender to see where to mount the hinge -- the door sags too much when open and when closed cannot see the hinge.

Does the trim on the fender (fender flare) need to be removed 1st (are there screws under it that hold the fender on?) or will it come off with the fender when it is removed? Does the bumper need to be removed?

Thanks,
Bill

Are you sure you have to remove the fender? On mine a 97, you don't.
See if the front bolts are accessible from inside behind the dash and kickpanel.
Get some help, that door is heavy.

Best regards,

I don't have to remove the fender to remove the door but the upper hinge weld connecting the hinge to the frame has completely broken loose. The kit from the Jeep dealer has a reinforcing fitting that goes over the hinge and attaches to the frame with rivits and is not adjustable after installed. Since the hinge is loose when the door is removed the hinge will need to be reattached and if it is out of position the door will probably not close. So I thought if the fender were removed I could see the other end of the hinge and with the door closed mark the correct position for the hinge then remove the door and hopefully attach the hinge in the correcxt position.

Thanks,
Bill

I think you can leave the bumper on but just take off the tip. My flare clips on from above but look to see if yours has screws. Remove the inner fender though first.

AlohaBra,
Thanks so much for the info and the quick reply. I plan to do this on Sat.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
