2000 Intrepid Tranmission Problem

I have a 200 intrepid with 125000 miles I replaced the transmission in it at about 80000. Now the problem is that when you are driving down the road the engine light turns on and shifts into low. I pull over and turn off the car and start it up again and it runs. I usually know if its going to do that at some point because when i put it in reverse it shifts hard. Thats how i know it will do it at some point during the ride. Any suggestions?
Thanks

The transmission is electronically controlled and is going into limp home mode (2nd gear and reverse only). When one of this transmissions fail, it can be mechanical (the transmission itself) or electronic (transmission control unit). When you have a failure it is very important to find out why the trans failed. If it simply wore out (at 80K miles I doubt it) then a rebuild or replace should work fine after the trans computer is reset. If the trans failed b/c of a problem with the computer, then you will doom the new transmission to a quick wearout and failure, over and over again. Many trans shops only fix the mechanical and leave the electronics in disrepair and then hope that the trans fails after the warranty so they can rebuild it again and get your $. You can also doom your transmission to failure if you put the wrong fluid in it. Say the trans was 1/2 quart low, so you decide to top it off with any off the shelf trans fluid you found at walmart, the trans will be a useless pile of junk in 10K miles or less, since you just poisoned it with the incorrect fluid. These transmissions use Daimler/Chrysler ATF+4 only. Dextron/Mercron (most common fluid) will ruin it right away.

Did you ever figure out what the cause is. I am working on a 99 Dodge intrepid with a similar issue.
My boss took the car over the weekend for a 2hour trip 1 way, ands on the way back the trans would shift ok, I think he said it was shifting a lil hard downshit but then when he would come to a complete stop it would not upshifty at all, he would have to shut the engine off and restart it to get it to shift fine, that happened a few times then he just would put it in neutral when coming to a stop, then CHECK ENGINE light is coming on because of this now also. Scanned it at work and got codes P0700 P0733 P1790.

The 1998 and up have problems with the speed sensors and nothing inside the transmission.I have seen one go,the chain broke and ruined the case. You can use Dextron but put in a bottle of Lubegard and it is the black bottle.Lubegard is a friction modifier that turns Dextron into the mopar fluid and sold at certain auto parts stores. It is approved by Chrysler also and the mopar fluid is $5.00 a quart. My father does it this way without any problems.Look into getting a reman transmission also from Jasper.Jasper has the best warrenty, nationwide warrenty for 3 years
