My ac compressor will turn on at idle, but when i start driving itll stop and start. if i turn on the ac at high rpm the belt sounds like it slips. I can feel the compressor turn on and off and it feels like the belt is trying to spin the compressor but it feels lke the compressor is siezing. This all started when I recharged my freon. The compressor has a whine when it was working. is it time for a new compressor?

YOU recharged your freon? did u use r134a? if you did, did you properly drain the r12 out and retro fit the fittings? did you overcharge it? it could be so many things that caused your compressor to die....even old age..... so before you replace it and try again then blow that one because of a mistake id find out why it went in the first place.

i didn't drain the r12, i have a 94 integra. Is there a certain way to recharge the freon? i have a extra compressor lying around that im going to put in. any tips on what not to do?

so what did you re-charge with? and yes, one very important tip (other than the freon one)... once you disconnect the ac lines from the compressor, wrap them in a bag and tape them up. because some of the parts of your ac system will get ruined of exposed to any moisture.

If you have R12 previously in your system and you charge R-134a into it, you are screwed. No shops will work on your AC system anymore because if they evacuate your system the AC mixture in your system will contaminate their whole refrigerant tank.

A lot of irresponsible people will just open the system and let the refrigerant escape into the environment which is highly illegal (it’s also dangerous, if you skin touches the refrigerant, it will seriously burn you).

If you did not convert your system from R12 to R-134a, the R-134a refrigerant will slowly escape from your system because the molecules are much smaller than the R12 and the R12 system hoses can not contain it.

If you do somehow open the system, you have to plug up the open lines and try to finish the repair as soon as you can because moisture in the air will decrease the life span of your receiver dryer or accumulator.

To properly charge an AC system you have to evacuate the whole system and put it in vacuum, there should not be air inside the system because air will actually damage it and cause your compressor to have irregular operation.
