Alright so I have been reading about the 3000GT, the non TT/VR4 version and I read that it is slow/sluggish. When you guys say that could you compare it to a different car? Like I'm thinking can it beat a Civic Si? or a Honda Accord? I'm really not sure at all, I'm new to this whole thing to be honest. Thanks for any help guys.

It's covered in the FAQ.

If you're gonna get a 3000GT, go for the VR-4. The non-turbo's aren't very impressive. The VR-4's not only twin-turbocharged and intercooled, but they have AWD, active-aerodynamic apendages that adjust with speed, in-car adjustable suspension, and are just cooler cars. Why fight with Honda Civics and V6 Mustangs when you can do battle against Supras, RX-7's, and Corvettes?

One reason and one reason only.....it's my first real car other than a Toyota Matrix and I'm 17 haha. :frown:

The vr4 is not for everyone. The SL and DOHC base models with manual transmissions are quite competitive and IMO are definantly a much better option for a 17 year old (no offense)

Ah! Well since you're only 17, perhaps 322 hp is a bit excessive. The non-turbo versions are still rather stylish.

A dohc n/a is still very fun to drive and you can get some practice in before possibly upgrading to a VR4. The DOHC n/a models could be compared to as the mid 90's GT Mustangs in terms of straight speed. Like Igo said, read the FAQ, pg 1.

LOL... at least your honest!:grinyes: ... and realize that cars can be dangerous... Get yourself an Sl or Base.. You will feel extreamly cool and get lots of attention (i would have liked to get that when i was 17) Plus in all honesty the N/A 3000gt will probably feel very fast to you especially if you get a manual...

haha alright thanks everyone. yeah I was just wondering if it would even feel fast/sporty or if I'd feel more driving around an accord. but yeah I just want something to learn on as I do planning on getting a better car once I get some experience. But this car will provide me with something that is different than your everyday car? liek are there any better cars that I could learn on that are faster? or is this a good choice

If you want cheap power the 3/S would not really fall in that category. I'd say a 5.0 Mustang would. Cheap and infinite aftermarket....if only they didn't look like they could be an Escort too...

At 17 I perosonally think the DOHC already is fast enough, again nothing personal. I just know I would have killed myself with a faster car at that age, I also would have killed for ANY 3000gt at that age. So if you can get your hands on one, I think you'll be more than satisfied.

hahaha worddd....damn yeah i don't know I want something with enough power to it where I won't get bored with it tooo fastt but I don't wanna go in over my head. anything other than a 5.0 mustang cuz I agree it looks like an escort  plus with a v8 (i think) those mustangs are probably hard on gas i'd assume?

LT1 F-body.

A n/a 3000GT is a great choice for a 17-year-old; it can seat you and three friends, you can actually fit stuff in the trunk, it gets alright gas mileage, it's a good looking design, and it's fun to drive. Go for it. Have you decided which bodystyle you want? (there's the 1st-gen., and 3 variations of the 2nd-gen... not including the Spyder.)

the 5.0 mustang would be way worse on gas than a 3s. (I had a 5.0 firebird)... Basicaly any older car with a v8 would be cheap and have power... (however being that i owned one... Import cars were much nicer on the interiors and exteriors than the muscle cars... thus you would feel like you were driving an old car..)

But as i stated... really ... Speed wont be a problem for you whatever you get... you will think it is fast...

But if you want cheap that feels fast you could also look at ... Nissan 240 sx (RWD!, the 5.0 club (firebirds, camaros, mustangs), Honda prelude (not really to cheap for a good one), Celica, Eclipse/Talon,

The 240 is a good choice for younger drivers, it is easy to work on (and to learn on), you can usually find a good deal, gets you more respect than a honda, And has a very strong and tough motor (for a 4cyl)... Most of all... Its rear wheel drive (fun but can also be more dangerous than a fwd car)

Eclipses are also a good choice but seem to not be quite as reliable as the 240... But with either of those you get the import tech... makes the car seem newer than domestics of the same year:2cents:

btw I prob. forgot some cars but someone will correct me for sure !:icon16:

hmmm I'm liking the 1999 300GT SL. This one is one for sale that I have found online for 14,000. Is that a good deal? Also how easy are these cars to work on b/c as liquidPunk said the 240's are on the easy side? haha and good point I'm sure I will think it is fast enough :iceslolan

I would go find more 99's for sale with similar mileage and in similar condition and compare. It sounds like a reasonable price as long as its in good condition and doesn't have a bunch of miles on it already.

99s are so sexy...

14k seems ok, but theres alot of factors. whats the milage? does it have maint. records? 60K tune? etc.

liquidPunk
07-30-2006, 11:17 PM
Decent price it seems but as said many factors..

Anyway these cars arent horrible to work on but they arent the easiest either... As long as you pay attention its not too bad.. but if you start with some maint. stuff and then work to the harder things it may be easy for you but ultimately it depends on the person.. The guys on here are a huge help as well (and stealth316.com)

But man... the 99"s look so amazing! ..
-I would make sweet love to that car:naughty:

You'd assume wrong actually. The Fox body 5.0's were capable of 25mpg when driven normally. Heck even the LS1 F bodys could manage upward of 28mpg. Just because something is a V8 doesnt mean its automatically going to be a gas hog.

Case in point a guy I work with has a Factory Five Cobra kit car. He has a 5.0 in it making 450hp and still can get 22 mpg.

DoctorSwole

the car i posted above has 80k miles and a clean car report.

Stealthee: Though the LS1 can get 28 mpg, usually its going to be much worse unless all you do is highway driving. The only thing giving it that high mpg is a very tall 6th gear and the torque to cruise at low rpm's. I remeber RedNeck used to complain about how bad his F-body was on gas.

Yeah, vica-versa too. My little 1.3L rotary is the thirstiest car I've ever driven... and she only drinks premium! :(

Any car can beat a civic v-tec or a accord. I even bet that a gremlin would beat those cars:lol:

if you know anything about a contour svt, its about that speed

Horsepower : 222 hp

Top speed : 140
0-60 mph : 7.5 sec.
0-¼ mile : 15.3 sec @ 91.0 mph

and with 80k and 14 grand, i say its not a bad deal for a 99
there may be better deals but that one's not bad
