I have a 2002 2.4L and was wandering if the exhaust pipe diameter was 2.25 inches. The guy at the exhaust shop said it was, and I measured it to be the same. Is this right because if it is I dont see a point of getting new pipe that is the same size.

Yeah it is, and trust me, if your goin to replace your exhaust, get a new pipe. It doesnt cost that much, and its worth it in the long run. Almost anything is better quality than stock, and itll last longer.

Just trust us man, I have an 03 and im gettin an entire new exhaust. The stock is in great condition, but I know the main rule of life. There is the easy way, and then theres the other way that becomes easy once you get your next paycheck. Personally, I like the second way. I mean, if you really want to keep the exhaust stock, go ahead. It wont destroy your car or anything, it will just make you spend more money later on.
