Why?

cuda_dude

to free up some hp.... why not, less drag on the timing chain and better circulation

why not? looks good and the housing looks good too. How far are you now on the LT1 work?

Yeah, thats actually a real smart mod. It allows more circulation at lower rpms and allows you to turn on the water pump even with the motor off and cause of lack of drag on the camshaft and timing chain in general it allows for a quicker rev and more power to the wheels.

It is a great mod....for a race car.
Can't see it worth $500 for a street car.

It is one of those mods that you do when you are looking for just a little something more because you already have everything else.

Thinking about it...I will shut up. Completely different on the LT1. :icon16:

lol yeah, on an LS1 it's a little pricey... only $150-$200 on an LT1

this is only the 43gpm pump. If this was a drag car i would have went with the 55gpm model

how is your build up going? almost done?

It's going good. I am taking my time, just putting things on as I feel like it lol

The heads just got here and the intake manifold will be here this week so it should be back together in no time.

For LT1's thats the best all around pump to have performance wise and circuation wise (well the 55GPH is the best but thats the second best)

Nice grab - that is definitely on my rebuilt list of parts - maybe the race version but I hear that one doesn't quite clear the radiator housing, which requires some modification.

That pump is great for LT1's no only for HP but also as a preventative measure against leaks... by doing away with all the cam driven shit underneath its a better fit and plus it allows you to change to an olde school double roller timing chain. Stock LT1 chains are pathetic.

...I never thought about running the pump with the motor off. How do you do that, by simply turning key to the power on position??

I hear alot of the guys that spend weekends at the track have a toggle switch and second set of power wires run directly off the battery. So in between runs to cool the engine off and not waste gas or have the combustion process add some heat. They flip the switch and have the pump run and circulate the coolant while the car is off. BTW , wow  . Where the hell have you been?

I've been... working hard I guess? Started moving up at my company and there's little time to slack off now :disappoin

Plus my car has been rotting without an engine since last Nov - hasn't moved an inch. But I'm starting to build her up now and the plan is to have her done by next summer.

NOW I'll need to be on to ask advice/post progress picks... its good to see a lot of familiar faces John. What's new?

Bought me a supercharger :icon16: and I think you were around since the 4 bolt main 383, but I am also putting on my american sports car design cowl ram air hood and putting in a 8.5 Police cruiser rear.

Lucky  . Man this humidity out here is killing me. I started trying to get alot of this work on my car as well as others done as quickly as possible but even after you pay for this stuff the work involved in this weather is killing me. I am literally drenched in sweet from morning til evening.

And to think I freeze all day inside my air conditioned ice-box for an office... :uhoh:

Yes I remember when you got the new block John and you did say you planned on charging it also; good for you. How much boost - 6-8 psi? What compression you running?

I've got a new block coming myself - took the old one apart and it was in bad shape. Looks like the original owner had blown the engine before the 355 rebuild. One cylinder was sleeved and there was a lot of material missing off the bottom end (we later found out the cap screws on two of the old rods gave out and they tore everything up).

New block is a freshly bored .020 over (we're finishing the last tenth up here), line honed, bored, & decked, with billet splayed main caps (center three) and ARP main studs. This bitch is going to be a 1000+ hp capable short block once I'm done.

Just thinking ahead like you for a future blower application you but I kinda goofed on the heads... bought LT4 castings (54cc chambers) and now I'm not sure what compression/boost combo I'll go with some day. If it were high boost I should have got really big (like 72cc or something) chambered heads and budgeted for custom low comp pistons. Ah well... may just leave it N/A and make power the olde fashioned way.

Think 8-10psi would be safe on an 11:1 motor?

EDIT: Sorry for usurping this thread Cuda Dude. And you'll forgive me when I shamelessly bite your styles and paint my water pump black to match the pump! lol That looks sweet.

Yeah, mine is only 6 -7 PSI. If I go higher I have to change the spline so as to not create a issue with paxtons over spinning. As for that comp ratio thats high but 8 PSI is fine and if you go 9 or 10 PSI I would recommend intercooling and LT1's reverse cooling design is actually more boost compretition friendly. So while its not optimal for your plans. Its doable IMO but I would attempt to bring the compression down via headgaskets or what ever means though.

That's what I figured. In some ways it seems like a waste spending $4k to buy a 6psi blower, you know compared to like a 20-22PSI monster (for like $5+k). Then again 6psi of added boost to a high compression car is a different story. Say you won't be changing to a dedicated blower cam will you? I'm really starting to look at the GM 847 cam for my 383 - 230something duration, .575in & .595 ex lift with 1.6rr. I know the increased exhaust lift would help out a blower. Ideally I'd like to choose a good cam that'll run hard N/A that I could later on just bolt up a small blower and only have to change the injectors, pump settings, PCM tune, etc. If that's possible...

Say I'll post a pic of my new hood in another thread Jonny - post a pic of yours once its up so I can see (unless you have already, then point me to it).
Adios

i know what you mean, its been 30+ here (90) and really humid, and sandblasting and washing parts all day in coveralls dosnt help either, when i get home, i hide in the basement, ofcourse dosnt help that i removed the ac from my car.. lol, its been nice though, 2 weeks break from racing, dont even have to work on the car, feelin good bout the rest of the season(won an NHRA wally, and a IHRA ironman) all i need now is for it to cool down about 10 degrees

Ya, CELSIUS is for pansies. Plus, it's complicated and hard to spell!

Freezing point - 0 degrees C
Boiling point - 100 degrees C
Alternate spellings - C, Celsius, Celius... :p

Yesterday here in Toronto was brutal. I turned on the evening news and they had a live shot of one of the downtown pools... it was friggin packed with tons of little kids (like 6 & 7 year olds!). I was like, it's 11:30pm - don't these kids need to go to bed? Last night was 28C I think in the city.
